Council Member Marjorie Velázquez - What's Happening in District 13

Dear Neighbor,

We are just one day away from the New Year, and there is much to celebrate and look forward to in the coming months. But before we step into the new year, I want to thank you for your continuous support this past year.

Before we embark on the new year, I encourage you to search within yourself and identify your purpose. Many of us often question what that purpose is, but no matter the perspective, we are here for a reason. I began my career in public service after two life-changing accidents that opened my eyes to the disparities in health care. To this day, I strive to support our hospitals and medical staff to provide equitable healthcare to our community. This continues to be a part of my purpose, and I will always advocate for those without a voice. My mission is to ensure you have access to critical resources, and my office is always ready to support you and your needs.

As a reminder, my district office will reopen on Tuesday, January 3rd, during regular business hours. We will also resume in-person appointments on Tuesday and look forward to seeing you all. If you would like to request an appointment with one of our Constituent Services Liaisons, please call us at (718) 931-1721 or email us at District13@council.nyc.gov.

I wish you all a joyous and safe New Years!

Sincerely,

Council Member Marjorie Velázquez

Governor Hochul Signs Legislation to Protect Integrity of Public Work Projects

 Pens and Legislation

Legislation (S.5994C/A.1338C) Establishes Registration System for Contractors and Subcontractors Engaged in Public Work and Covered Private Projects to Better Enforce Labor Laws and Regulations

Governor Kathy Hochul today signed legislation (S.5994C/A.1338C) into law, establishing a registration system for contractors and subcontractors engaged in public work and covered private projects in order to provide additional transparency and better enforce existing labor laws and regulations.

"This legislation will help ensure transparency, reduce fraud and ensure taxpayer money goes to contractors who treat their workers with dignity and respect," Governor Hochul said. "Our workers are the engine of our economy and we must do everything we can to protect their rights."

Legislation (S.5994C/A.1338C) creates a registration system for contractors and subcontractors that bid on contracts for public work projects and commence work on certain covered private projects that receive public subsidies in New York. This new law requires contractors and subcontractors to register with the Department of Labor by providing a series of disclosures about their businesses every two years. The Department of Labor will determine whether a contractor or subcontractor is fit to register, based on previous labor law and workers compensation law violations, including prevailing wage requirements, and create a publicly available online database. This law will ensure state and local entities engage with contractors and subcontractors that will abide by New York labor laws and regulations.

Release of Body Camera Footage from a Officer Involved Shooting that Occurred on November 1, 2022 in the confines of the 75th Precinct.

The NYPD is releasing today body-worn camera footage from an officer involved shooting that occurred on November 1st, 2022 in the confines of the 75th Precinct.

The video includes available evidence leading up to the incident as well as during the incident. The NYPD is releasing this video for clear viewing of the totality of the incident.

All NYPD patrol officers are equipped with body-worn cameras. The benefits of cameras are clear: transparency into police activity, de-escalation of police encounters and accountability for police officers, through an independent account of interactions between the police and the citizens they serve. Body-worn cameras serve as a vital part of ongoing efforts to increase trust between the police and all New Yorkers.

SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE $1,000,000 FOR AKWESASNE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB TO SUPPORT MOHAWK YOUTH

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand are announcing that they secured $1,000,000 for the Boys & Girls Club in Akwesasne for children of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe in the FY2023 spending bill. The Boys & Girls Club of America provides safe community gathering centers nationwide and empowers young students with educational programs designed to help them succeed in school. The federal dollars Gillibrand and Schumer fought for will help construct a new “Great Futures Start Here” Clubhouse in Akwesasne to serve this purpose for Mohawk youth. The new Clubhouse will enable the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club to continue offering its vital afterschool, summer, athletic, and meal programs in a safe, modern, and accessible space.

“Investing in the youth of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is investing in the future of the North Country, and I am proud to deliver this $1 million in funding to boost the community, its families, and most importantly the children of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe,” said Senator Schumer. “These funds will help finally begin construction of the community gathering space the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club has long deserved for afterschool and other essential youth programs. I will always fight to deliver meaningful, community driven investments to uplift the future of our children in Upstate New York.”

“Fostering a sense of community and support is vital to helping our youth get off on the right foot. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America has a proven track record of doing just that and preparing young people across New York State to achieve their full potential,” said Senator Gillibrand. “This $1,000,000 will kick-start the building of a safe and modern community center for Mohawk youth and provide them with the indispensable opportunities they deserve. The children of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe are essential to the fabric of our state and I am thrilled to announce this important investment in their education and in their future.”

EDITOR'S NOTE:

Perhap some of the Bronx Community Board 11 members are barking up the wrong elected officials when trying to get a Boys and Girls club in CB 11. Maybe they should aim for higher office.
