MAYOR ADAMS HOLDS CITY OF YES RALLY FOR ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY
The New York City Council held a hearing Monday on zoning for economic opportunity.

The hearing focused on the Adams administration's "City of YES" plans, which are aimed at removing obstacles for small businesses to expand and creating more lively commercial areas.

"Government is a living, breathing entity," said Mayor Eric Adams. "It must adapt and grow as time moves on."

"This initiative needs to strike a proper balance between accommodating businesses, the demand for live-work neighborhoods, and the existing character of our neighborhoods," said Council Member Kevin Riley, a Democrat.

City of Yes initiatives also include plans to create more affordable housing and promote sustainability.

NEW YORK CITY WEIGHS IN ON STREET VENDING
NYC Council Members Introduce Street Vending Legislation.

Int. 24, which would allow vendors to vend in front of “obstructions” like tree pits and garbage cans, which would, in many instances, place vendors in the middle of busy sidewalks. While 12 feet of legal “clear path” would be maintained, that would be measured from the property line to the “obstruction” and not the vending operation. As such, the actual pedestrian walkway clearance could be 5-7 feet or significantly less. While the intention is clearly to create more spaces for vending, this bill would place vendors in the middle of busy sidewalks – hampering the flow of pedestrians and raising safety concerns in a way that would negatively impact the corridors we serve.

Int. 431, which would issue 7,500 new vending permits over the next five years and then an “unlimited” number – at least until there is adequate enforcement of existing rules and a thorough study to better understand the street vending ecosystem and inform policy decisions, as recently recommended in the report from the Mayor’s Small Business Advisory Commission: Making a City of Yes for Small Business.
