Wave Hill Weekly Events May 16 – May 23 | Wings Over Wave Hill Weekend

 

In May, migratory and resident raptors and songbirds animate the gardens and the skies above Wave Hill. Join us May 18-19 for Wings Over Wave Hill. Our naturalists and expert birders are on hand to reveal and explain their activities. Our popular annual falconry demonstration returns and there’s fun for all ages with hands-on activities, walks, talks and a bird-themed Family Art Project. Adults are invited to stay late on Saturday for an evening of birders’ trivia, sunset walks and drinks on our cafe terrace.  

Garden Highlights Walk

Join a knowledgeable Wave Hill Garden Guide for a leisurely stroll in the gardens. Topics vary by season and the expertise of the Guide--come back for an encore; each walk varies with the Guide leading it. This walk lasts a half-hour to 45 minutes. Public Garden Walks are most appropriate for adults or young adults.

Join Director of Horticulture Cathy Deutsch for an insider’s perspective of seasonal garden highlights and changes. Cathy will share favorite plant combinations, specimen acquisitions, Wave Hill techniques and some historical stories. Severe weather cancels.  

Family Art Project: Painting to Migratory Birdsongs

Migrating birds pass over Wave Hill each spring, singing and warbling as they go. Some even stop here and treat us to a birdy concert! With the music of migratory birds for inspiration, sculpt and paint your own feathered friends. Wings over Wave Hill event. 

At 11:30AM, families can enjoy a storytime program in the Gund Theater; all ages welcome.  

Sit and Spot Birding

 Join Bronx birder Haley Scott for this mindful approach to birding. Settle down in a comfortable spot and expand your awareness of nature and the bird activity around you. Be in the moment as you observe birds flying overhead while sitting in-community with other birders. Bring your own binoculars or borrow ours. A limited number of folding chairs and foam mats will be available for participants.

Falconry Presentation: Skyhunters in Flight
$20 adults; $12 children 8-17; including admission to the grounds. Wave Hill Members save 10%. 

Back by popular demand, Master Falconer Brian Bradley and his beautiful and beloved raptors are here for a live bird presentation! Watch hawks, falcons and owls sharpen their hunting skills during an exciting outdoor flight demonstration. Hear about the ancient sport of falconry and see live raptors from around the world. Ages eight and older welcome with an adult. Rain location: Armor Hall in Wave Hill House.

Night Out at Wave Hill: The Birders Lounge 
$25; including admission to the grounds. Members save 10%

Don’t let the fun end! Grab your friends or a date and spend a leisurely spring evening at Wave Hill with fellow birders and nature enthusiasts. Enjoy drinks and a lively round of Birders Trivia with local bird guide Gabriel Willow as your host, and hang out on our tented café terrace with gorgeous views of the open lawns and woodlands. Wrap up your evening with a guided nature walk as the birds are heading home to roost or enjoy a quiet sunset from the café terrace or the Great Lawn. No birding experience necessary! Cash bar with a variety of local beers and themed cocktails. Ages 21 and older. 

Spring rain will not dampen the fun! We’ll carry on under the tent if rain is light. Moves indoors if it’s chilly or rain is heavy. 

The Café, Shop and Wave Hill House close at 8:30PM. Grounds close at 9:00PM.  

Spring Birding

Welcome migratory birds back to Wave Hill this spring! Explore the gardens and woodlands with birders Gabriel Willow and Alex Wang to look for resident and rare birds as they pass through on their northern journey or settle down for the season. A limited number of binoculars, monoculars and walking sticks are available to borrow at the Perkins Visitor Center. Ages 10 and older welcome with an adult.  

Yoga in the Garden  
$25; including admission to the grounds. Wave Hill Members save 10%

Root your feet in the grass and look out upon the vistas as you enjoy a gentle yoga class led by Susie Caramanica. All levels welcome. Continues through June; no class May 26. 

This is a beginner level class that can be modified. Class is usually held on the Great Lawn and is accessible via flat paved paths. Occasionally the location may change due to other activity on the grounds. The instructor uses a portable speaker. Moves into the Ecology Building in case of rain; this space is accessible only by stairs. If you have any injuries or restrictions, please let the instructor know before class.  

Owl Pellet Dissection
Free with admission
Registration not required.  

Owls swallow their prey whole. Parts of their prey, such as bones, feathers and fur, are bound up during digestion into a tight pellet, which the owl regurgitates. Drop in for this exploratory workshop with naturalist Gabriel Willow and discover the origins of the owl’s diet. Ages eight and older welcome with an adult.
