Ice Rink at Van Cortlandt Park Taking Shape

The first section of the new Van Cortlandt Park Seasonal Ice Skating rink where the main operation center and customer services area was put together as several modular overseas shipping boxes were placed next to  and on top of each other. One by one the steel boxes were placed next to each other, welded together, and then the second floor was added to the bottom floor. The two story structure contains as many as 15 of these modular overseas cargo boxes with windows cut out for viewing and to let sunlight in as you will see in the photos below.

The next phase will be to set up the rink itself, and then it is predicted by the operator in early November to have a soft opening before the official opening around Thanksgiving. If everything goes on schedule and the weather gets cold enough to make and keep the ice hard the rink will be in operation 7 days a week. The seasonal ice skating rink is being built on the two front tennis courts that became decrepit over the past years.

THE R. KELLY TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET SING-ALONG
TO NEW YORK COMIC CON

Interactive Screening of Original Trapped in the Closet
Takes Place on Saturday, October 13

All-New Chapters Premiere on IFC in November

Austin, TX & New York, NY--- Friday, October 5, 2012 --- The Action Pack, the interactive screening arm of the growing Alamo Drafthouse lifestyle brand, has teamed up with RCA Records and IFC to produce a sing-along of R. Kelly's original Trapped in the Closet at New York Comic Con (NYCC- www.newyorkcomiccon.com) on Saturday, October 13 at 8 pm at the Javits Center.

The Trapped in the Closet Sing-Along is a fully interactive cinematic experience featuring subtitled lyrics on screen, props distributed throughout the audience, and a dance party with all of R. Kelly's most well known hits mixed in between original Trapped chapters 1- 22.

"We did a screening of the first chapters of Trapped in the Closet at the Alamo way back in 2007," said Henri Mazza, founder of The Action Pack. "Watching the hip-hopera unfold with a packed audience gasping and reacting at every twist and turn was perhaps one of the crowning moments of that decade, so as soon as we heard that IFC was going to be releasing new chapters in the hopefully never-ending saga we reached out to them to start the process of bringing these interactive experiences to life."

Commented IFC's Blake Callaway, senior vice president of marketing: "The sing along is a great way to tap into Trapped in the Closet, R. Kelly and karaoke fans alike, and get everyone excited for the new chapters coming only to IFC in November.  The audience is in store for a truly one-of-a-kind experience."

The Sing-Along at New York Comic Con will be emceed by Mazza who will introduce segments of music videos, instruct attendees on the proper use of spatulas, toy Berettas, and rubbers throughout the screening, and demand that audience members stand up to Step in the Name of Love. The event is open to all New York Comic Con badge holders.

For additional details check out the Action Pack's "Trapped in the Closet" page on their website:   www.actionpackent.com

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW - No Matter How You Spin It, This Has Been a Big Loss for Gay Marriage

By Senator Rev. Rubén Díaz
32nd Senatorial District, Bronx County, New York

No Matter How You Spin It, This Has Been a Big Loss for Gay Marriage

You should know that since the New York State Democratic Primary has come and gone, people are trying to spin the results in different ways.

As you know, gay marriage became law in New York thanks to four Republican Senators - Stephen M. Saland, Roy J. McDonald, James S. Alesi, and Mark Grisanti - who dared to jump ship and join the Democratic Senators who voted for gay marriage.  Because of their votes on gay marriage, the four of them suffered defeat, near loss, and embarrassment.  Their votes on gay marriage may very well decide a shift in
power in the State Senate.

Out of the four Senators, James Alesi’s and Roy McDonald’s votes for gay marriage have ended their
careers.

Senator Alesi, after seeing the polls and the writing on the wall, decided not to pursue re-election and dropped out of the Senate race.  The reason is because of his vote in favor of gay marriage.  He knew he’d get beaten up.

Senator Roy McDonald lost his primary because of his vote for gay marriage.

Senator Saland won the Republican Primary but suffered badly – an embarrassment for sure.  He almost lost the Republican Primary because of his vote for gay marriage.  Yes, he was defeated at the Conservative Primary.

Senator Grisanti won his Primary race, not by much, but he's still not out of the woods. He has to face a Conservative Party Candidate and a Democratic Party Candidate in the General Election and he may lose ... all because of his vote for gay marriage.

So no matter how you spin it, the facts are the facts: two out of four Senators who voted for gay marriage are out of
commission.

Here in the Bronx, even though no one may be talking about it, I supported three State candidates and one Judicial candidate based upon their positions on gay marriage.

Luis Sepulveda won the Democratic Primary by a large margin.  Mark Gjonaj won his Democratic Primary, and even though you can spin it to say that he won because of accusations against Naomi Rivera for possible misuse of taxpayers’ money, he won with my support which I gave him well before any scandals made it to the press. I also, supported Manny Tavarez, a political unknown, without campaign
funds, who ran for the first time and he got 30% of the vote – not bad for a beginner.  Judge Fernando Tapia was supported by me, and he will become a Bronx Supreme Court Judge.

And now, as the General Elections take place, I plan to see how many people will cross party lines, especially in the Hispanic community, and not vote for Democrats, not vote for Republicans – and see how many votes we can bring to the Conservative Party line.  Whatever it is, you can
bet that the Conservative Party line in New York City will get more votes than ever before.

Spin it any way you want, but to all the gay marriage supporters and to all who listened to the promises and the bragging about what would take place after the gay marriage vote passed – especially Senators Stephen Saland, Roy McDonald, James Alesi, and Mark Grisanti: “You all suffered a big loss.”

I am State Senator Reverend Rubén Díaz and this is what you should know.

Bronx Chamber of Commerce Italian Heritage Month Leadership Luncheon

The Bronx Chamber of Commerce President Mr. Lenny Caro and his staff out did themselves this past Wednesday with their Italian Heritage month Leadership Luncheon. Tenor Chris Macchio (compliments of the Belmont BID) belted out the Italian and United States national anthems to open the luncheon. If you have been to Citi Field you may have heard Mr. Macchio sing the national anthem, but not at Yankee Stadium. When I asked Mr. Caro about that his answer was we are working on that for next season.

The Honorees included Councilman James Vacca (Jimmy). New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, Assemblyman Mike Benedetto, Mr. Tony Signorile (Bronx Columbus Day Parade Chairman), Ms. Geri Sciortino (Bronx Design Group), Mr. Joesph Deglomini Jr. (Simone Development), Mr. Anthont Mormile (Mahopac National Bank), and Ms. Rosemary DeLuca (Wildlife Conservation Society). Each honoree received the Bronx Chamber of Commerce Bronze Eagle and citation along with some great Italian food.

Mr Caro defined the mission of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce, and said that they were at City hall recently to try to get some of "Crazy Laws" from over 200 years ago that are still laws and merchants being given summonses for. he mentioned the law requiring a spittoon in the Establishment, and having your licence number on your business card as examples. Mr. Caro then went on to name all the new businesses, and spoke about how the Yankee playoffs will add to the business boom, hoping to see another World Series winning team.

Mr. Caro then introduced the elected officials, and Councilman Vacca and Assemblyman Benedetto were rather short on their speeches. State Comptroller DiNapoli broke the ice by saying that he hoped to be half as popular as Councilman Jimmy Vacca which drew a roar from the packed room. DiNapoli went on to say how New York City has been the only area of the state that has fully regained its lost jobs due to the recession, and also is the only area to have gained jobs. He added that is good for New York City and good for New York State. Below are a few photos of the luncheon.
