NYC PUBLIC ADVOCATE RESPONDS TO THE SUPREME COURT OVERTURNING ROE V. WADE

"When we said, when advocates shouted, that conservatives would attack the core rights afforded to Americans when given the power, when we protested Trump, Kavanaugh, Gorsuch, Barrett, when we spoke about the consequences of the right wing’s agenda, it wasn’t hyperbole. It was a warning, one now realized as the Court strips away a fundamental right to privacy and bodily autonomy, striking at our liberty and at the health and safety of women and pregnant people across the country.

"People will die because of today’s decision. People have and will always seek abortions, and criminalizing them, making services inaccessible, only makes them more dangerous; pregnant people with no other options will be forced to endure torture or put their lives at risk. On the orders of a radical, far-right agenda, carried out by conservative justices, millions of Americans will lose their rights to body autonomy, to dignity, and to privacy – with harm falling disproportionately on low income communities and people of more color.

"With the court not only abandoning but endangering people, we need to stand up – for our rights and for our neighbors. Today we mourn, we comfort, and then we move to fight, to action – we cannot wait, because the people who brought this harm today are not waiting to bring more.

"The conservative movement and the judges it installed have done exactly what they promised to do, and they’re promising to do more. This decision openly invites, encourages further attacks on women, on the LGBTQIA community, on communities of more color, on the fundamental rights that we have fought for and won across decades and even centuries.

"In New York, I want people to know that abortion is legal in our city and state, and it will remain that way – this decision does not change that. At the same time, we can do more to protect the reproductive rights of both New Yorkers and people who come here for abortion services, and the Governor must bring the legislature back into session to enshrine the Equality Amendment.

"We can be stricken today – horrified, furious, distraught – but we cannot be still, and we cannot be silent. We can’t lose our will to fight, strengthened by a movement of millions and looking to the women who have long led that movement and this work as we fight our way forward and resist being dragged back, devastated but never defeated."

Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s Statement on SCOTUS Ruling Overturning Roe V Wade

Following today's ruling from the United States Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade Congressman Jamaal Bowman released the following statement in response:

“Today is a dark day in American history. We knew it was coming, but that doesn’t make it any less devastating.

“I want to first take a moment to send a message to everyone who today lost this fundamental, sacred right: we are with you, and we will not stop fighting with you. If you are in need of an abortion and you are in a state where you lost that right, New York will welcome you. We will do everything in our power to help you exercise your rights.

“Our country today failed the millions of Americans who will suffer from this inhumane, dangerous, and deadly ruling — especially the poor and people of color who will suffer and die the most. Every Senate Democrat, and every Senator who claims to be pro-choice, must be united and act now to restore and protect abortion rights and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act.

“This was not merely a court ruling, this was an attack – one that was planned by far-right extremists and carried out by the United States Supreme Court. This ruling is about controlling women and robbing them of their right to make decisions about their own bodies and healthcare. This is an outright attack on the overall freedoms of women across this country.

“Let’s be clear: between sham appointments, stolen seats, and extreme verdicts like this one today, the United States Supreme Court has lost its legitimacy. For our democracy and governance to work, we must restore the legitimacy of the Court. The best way to do that is to expand the Supreme Court and restore a level of balance that has eroded over the years.

“This is a dark day, but today the fight begins – the fight to restore abortion and reproductive rights in every state in the country . We must prevail, and I believe we will.”

Attorney General James Issues Statement on U.S. Supreme Court Decision

New York Attorney General Letitia James issued the following statement in response to the United States Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, striking down the fundamental federal right to abortion:

“Today’s ruling is a vicious, dangerous, and deliberate attack on our most basic freedom as humans. Every single person in this country should have the right to make their own decisions about their own bodies. But make no mistake: We will not go back to the inhumane and restrictive pre-Roe era. Regardless of the situation at the national level, New York will always be a safe haven for anyone seeking an abortion. I will work tirelessly to ensure that low-income New Yorkers and people from hostile states have access to the care they need and deserve. I will always fight to protect our right to make decisions about our own bodies and expand access to this critical and lifesaving care.”

Statement from Governor Hochul on Supreme Court’s Ruling in Dobbs V. Jackson

Governor Kathy Hochul New York State Seal

"Today, the Supreme Court took away the right of millions of Americans to make decisions about their own bodies. This decision is a grave injustice.

"I want everyone to know that abortion remains safe, accessible, and legal in New York. Just last month, in anticipation of this decision, I made an historic $35 million investment to support our state's network of abortion providers. Last week, thanks to the partnership of Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and Speaker Heastie, I signed a landmark, nation-leading package of legislation that further protects the rights of patients and empowers reproductive healthcare providers.

"The right to reproductive healthcare is a fundamental human right. History shows us that when abortion is banned, abortion becomes unsafe for women. Low-income individuals and people of color will be harmed the most.

"New York has always been a beacon for those yearning to be free. Our state will always be a safe harbor for those seeking access to abortion care. To anyone who is working to deny abortion access, our message is clear: not here, not now, not ever."

MAYOR ADAMS’ STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT’S DECISION TO EFFECTIVELY OVERTURN ROE v. WADE

New York City Mayor Eric Adams today released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, in which the court ruled to effectively overturn Roe v. Wade after almost 50 years of precedent and strip Americans of their right to access safe, legal abortions:

“Two days in a row, politics came before people at the highest court in the land, and, as a result, the health of our nation now hangs in jeopardy. What the court has done today ignores the opinions of the majority of Americans, as it helps states control women’s bodies, their choices, and their freedoms.

“There is nothing to call this Supreme Court opinion but an affront to basic human rights and one that aims to shackle women and others in reproductive bondage.

“Reproductive care is health care, but, put simply, this decision puts lives at risk.

“To all New Yorkers: I want to say that they can still access safe, legal abortions here in New York City. And to those seeking abortions around the country: Know that you are welcome here and that we will make every effort to ensure our reproductive services are available and readily accessible to you. This city will continue to respect, protect, and fulfill the core tenets of our fundamental rights to bodily autonomy and quality, critical, health care for those seeking access to an abortion.”
