As we celebrate Labor Day, I'd like to recognize labor unions and the hardworking women and men of New York. Thank you to the workers who serve, protect, build, educate, care for and strengthen our local communities.  

As State Comptroller, I will continue to stand up for workers and protect their rights. My office regularly looks at the issues affecting workers and the economy, including:

Returning Lost Money to New Yorkers

One of my favorite parts of being State Comptroller is returning lost money to New Yorkers. So far in 2023, we’ve returned more than $300 million. This week at the State Fair, I presented checks to six organizations for lost money totaling nearly $34,000, including Syracuse Community Connections, Syracuse Volleyballers, Clear Path for Veterans, George Fowler High School, the Town of Geddes and Bishop Ludden Jr./Sr. High School. My team is at the State Fair through Labor Day, September 4 to help you search for unclaimed money or search online anytime.

Three Arrested in Connection With Over $1 Million Medicaid Transportation Fraud Scheme

Three principals of Phinaliz Communications LLC were arrested in connection with a long-running scheme to steal over $1 million from the Medicaid program by billing for fake transportation services, duplicating and inflating costs, and paying kickbacks to Medicaid recipients, State Comptroller DiNapoli announced on behalf of the joint state, local and federal investigating agencies. The three defendants, Philip Mtui, Mbaga Kaiza, and Tony Taylor, were arrested last Thursday.

State Contract and Payment Actions in July

In July, the Office of the State Comptroller approved 1,580 contracts for State agencies and public authorities valued at $2.7 billion and approved nearly 1.8 million payments worth more than $9.1 billion.

NYSLRS Announces Employer Contribution Rates for 2024-25

State Comptroller DiNapoli announced employer contribution rates for the New York State and Local Retirement System for State Fiscal Year 2024-25. Employers’ average contribution rates will increase from 13.1% to 15.2% of payroll for the Employees’ Retirement System and from 27.8% to 31.2% of payroll for the Police and Fire Retirement System.
