Governor Hochul Provides Briefing At Sunset Park Subway Station

Governor Hochul delivers briefing at NYC Sunset Park Subway Station

Governor Hochul: "This morning, ordinary New Yorkers woke up in anticipation of a relatively normal day. They left their homes, en route to school, en route to their jobs... That sense of tranquility and normalness was brutally disrupted by an individual so cold hearted and depraved of heart that they had no caring about the individuals that they assaulted as they simply went about their daily lives."

Hochul: "I thank the partners, the brave people at the MTA, the first ones who had the sense, the drivers of the train, to leave the station to make sure no more victims could be hurt. The NYPD, FDNY, State Police, everyone involved in this has one purpose, and that is to stop the insanity of these crimes."

Good afternoon. This morning, ordinary New Yorkers woke up in anticipation of a relatively normal day. They left their homes, en route to school, en route to their jobs, and to a normal day, as I mentioned. That sense of tranquility and normalness was brutally disrupted by an individual so cold hearted and depraved of heart that they had no caring about the individuals that they assaulted as they simply went about their daily lives.

This individual is still on the loose. This person is dangerous. We're asking individuals to be very vigilant and alert. You will get more reports on specificity as the day goes on.

So this is an active shooter situation right now in the city of New York. I just got off the phone with the Mayor. He is recovering well, he is monitoring, he is actively engaged in the situation. I wanted to let him know that the people of the entire state of New York stand with the people of this city, this community, and we say no more. No more mass shootings, no more disrupting lives, no more creating heartbreak for people just trying to live their lives as normal New Yorkers. It has to end and it ends now.

And we are sick and tired of reading headlines about crime, whether they're mass shootings or the loss of a teenage girl or a 13 year old. It has to stop. I'm committing the full resources of our state to fight this surge of crime, this insanity that is seizing our city, because we want to get back to normal. It has been a long, hard two years. That's what we crave - that sense of stability and normalcy. And this is what the Mayor and I are going to continue to work toward.

And I thank the partners, the brave people at the MTA, the first ones who had the sense, the drivers of the train, to leave the station to make sure no more victims could be hurt. The NYPD, FDNY, State Police, everyone involved in this has one purpose, and that is to stop the insanity of these crimes. You'll hear now from our fire department. I want to thank them for being there to help us defuse a volatile situation, but we will be giving continued reports as this day unfolds.

Again, we ask everyone to be careful, be cautious, report what you see. It is likely that someone out there listening to this is going to help lead us to that individual. You have a description of what they're wearing, you know the details. But this is the day we pull together as New Yorkers, united in a common purpose to say no more.

And that is what I'm going to continue to do, as the Governor of the state of New York, working with our local partners right here. Thank you.

NYC PUBLIC ADVOCATE'S STATEMENT ON THE MASS SHOOTING IN A BROOKLYN SUBWAY STATION

"While much remains unclear and the situation is ongoing, we know that New Yorkers were terrorized this morning as their daily lives were struck by violence and fear. I pray for everyone injured in this tragedy, for the people who witnessed this attack, and for the entire community and city.

"I’m speaking with law enforcement and community members on the scene to provide comfort, promote strength, and get answers."

MAYOR ERIC ADAMS’ STATEMENT ON SUBWAY SHOOTING IN SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN

My fellow New Yorkers, since early this morning, my team and I have been in constant communication with NYPD, FDNY, EMS, emergency management and multiple other city agencies, as well as state and federal officials.

First, let me say we're praying for all New Yorkers who were injured or affected by today's attack. So far, we know that we have a multiple number of injuries, including victims of gunshot wounds.

I wish to thank all of the first responders who responded to the scene or at the local hospitals, helping with today's incident. You are what make New York the greatest city in the world, and I thank you for supporting your fellow New Yorkers.

To today's incident, as of now, we have not found any live explosive devices, but the suspect in today's attack detonated smoke bombs to cause havoc. We will not allow New Yorkers to be terrorized even by a single individual. The NYPD is searching for the suspect at large, and we will find him, but we ask the public to come forward with any information that may help us in this investigation. They can simply call (800) 577-TIPS, (800) 577-TIPS. We need your assistance.

Team AOC - Ban Conflicted Stock Trading Act update

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Congress

We must do everything we can to restore the American people’s faith in our institutions. That starts with making sure that no one can abuse their position in Congress to make huge profits from the stock market.

It's why Alexandria has worked with her colleagues for years to ban members of Congress from trading individual stock. She along with Reps. Krishnamoorthi and Neguse and Senator Merkley introduced a bill three years ago to ban stock trading because members of Congress should not be able to use privileged information to buy and trade individual stocks that they know will perform well.

The Ban Conflicted Trading Act has been gaining traction – and last week, Alexandria and her colleagues officially added an amendment to also prohibit member’s spouses, senior staff, and members serving on corporate boards from trading stocks as well.

The fact is, members of Congress and their ability to trade stocks is a direct conflict of interest. Members have access to briefings that require security clearances and enormous amounts of nonpublic information that can be used to buy or sell stocks.

Members then proceed to vote on key pieces of legislation while taking their own market interests into consideration.

This bill is about holding ourselves to a higher standard, and ensuring that Americans don’t have to worry about their interests competing with their member of Congress’ stock portfolio. Now is the time to bring this bill to the House floor for a vote.

Alexandria never shies away from fighting for what is right. She won’t stop until this bill is passed and will continue to advocate for integrity and fairness in Congress.

Thank you,

Team AOC
