Throggs Neck BID’s Business Appreciation Day

Our office was on hand to attend last weekend’s Business Appreciation Day put on by the Throggs Neck BID to take in some neighborhood fun and festivities!

Another Illegal Smoke Shop Closed and Padlocked in our District

No, we're not finished with illegal smoke shops!

Earlier this week, with help from the NYPD's 45th Precinct, we were successful in closing down yet another unlicensed smoke shop operating illegally within our District.

Thanking NYPD, the NYC Sheriff's office and NYC Consumer & Worker Protection again for their hard work and eliminating illegal smoke shops in our community!

This illegal smoke shop operating in District 13 was also closed down and padlocked earlier this week, this one also located on East Tremont Avenue.

Also attended the press conference earlier this week held by Mayor Eric Adams on the closing and padlocking of an illegal smoke shop at 4011 East Tremont Avenue within our District.

The closing of three smoke shops in our District this week shows incredible determination the Mayor, NYPD, the NYC Sheriff’s office and NYC Department of Worker Consumer and Protection to close down unlicensed smoke shops in our District and throughout NYC!

Sending a big thank you to NYC Sanitation for conducting this beach cleanup next to the DA Beach Club in Country Club on Saturday.

This was a huge project for us that we had been working on since the end of May after multiple constituents reached out to us.

After reaching out to our city agencies in attempts to find out who the lot belonged to, we were able to move forward. This was long awaited but the results were worth it!

Thanking DSNY once again for making our District’s beaches and coastlines looking pristine!

SENATOR RIVERA IN THE COMMUNITY

SENATOR RIVERA VISITS SENIOR CENTERS THROUGHOUT THE 33RD!

Senator Rivera was thrilled to visit neighbors at Senior Centers throughout his district ahead of the annual Senior Health Fair. This week, Senator Rivera toured the Riverdale Y, where he gave birthday wishes to those who were born in the month of July. Thank you to Melissa Sigmond and Matt Abrams Gerber for inviting the Senator.

On Wednesday, Senator Rivera visited both the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center (MMCC) in Norwood and the Sister Annunciata Bethell Neighborhood Senior Center in Bedford Park, where the Senator enjoyed lunch with the seniors. Thank you to Rosa Saldnaa from MMCC and Patricia Burlace from Sister Annunciata Bethell for the warm welcomes!

On Thursday, Senator Rivera visited Riverdale Senior Services (RSS), where the Senator provided a summary of the 2024 legislative session. The Senator discussed his 2025 legislative priorities and discussed his opposition to the Governor's last minute decision to not implement congestion pricing. Thank you to Isael Tejeda for putting together a great meeting.

SENATOR RIVERA GUEST LECTURE AT MONROE COLLEGE

This week, Senator Rivera had the opportunity to speak to Monroe College's Introduction to Political Science' class about his political journey and his experience as the Senate Health Committee Chair. As a former professor, Senator Rivera jumps at the opportunity to teach our next generation and very thankful to Monroe College Professor Dr. Lovis Nelson-Williams for inviting him to speak to her class.

Senator Rivera shares the community's concerns about public drug use and syringe litter near the Kingsbridge Underpass, Poe Park, and nearby hot spots. There are local harm reduction providers who clean up the needles safely and who connect with users to help them with recovery, medical care, and basic needs.

Our team created this schedule and contact informational sheet in collaboration with the harm reduction organizations serving the Northwest Bronx so that neighbors can contact them to assist with issues near Kingsbridge Road and the Grand Concourse. DEC Announces Falconry, Wildlife Rehabilitator, and Leashed Tracking Dog Examinations

 

Exams Will be Held Online Aug. 9, 2024; Registration Deadline Aug. 7, 2024

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced that examinations for individuals seeking a license to practice the sport of falconry, become a volunteer wildlife rehabilitator, or use leashed tracking dogs to find wounded or injured big game animals are scheduled for Aug. 9, 2024. DEC is offering the examinations online and at no cost to participants to increase access to the examinations.

 

The registration deadline is Aug. 7. To register, visit the 2024 Special Licenses Exams Registration website. Applicants will receive an email acknowledgement of registration; an additional one-time link to access the website on the date of the exams is sent to registrants at a later date. The link to the exam registration webpage can also be found on each of the individual license webpages at Division of Fish and Wildlife Special Licenses and Permits.

 

Apprentice Falconry License

 

Falconry has a rich history and tradition throughout the world and requires a significant commitment of time and effort. Apprentices are limited to possessing one bird, either an American kestrel or a red-tailed hawk. To qualify for the Apprentice Falconry License, applicants must:

• score 80 percent or higher on the written exam;
• be at least 14 years of age;
• possess a valid New York State hunting license;
• maintain DEC-approved facilities for housing falconry raptors; and
• be a resident of New York State.
  

A falconry study guide and examination manual are available from DEC at no cost on the DEC Falconry License webpage. The cost of a five-year falconry license is $40. Birds of prey are protected species and cannot be possessed without a license or other authorization from DEC.

Wildlife Rehabilitator License

 

Wildlife rehabilitators provide for the care of injured, sick, and orphaned wild animals for the purpose of returning rehabilitated animals to the wild. Prospective applicants are encouraged to gain experience by serving as an assistant to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. To qualify for the Wildlife Rehabilitator License, applicants must:

• score 80 percent or higher on the written exam;
• be at least 16 years of age;
• be interviewed by DEC Regional wildlife staff; and
• be a resident of New York State.
  

A wildlife rehabilitator study guide and examination manual are available from DEC at no cost on the DEC Wildlife Rehabilitator License webpage. There is no cost for the five-year wildlife rehabilitation license.

 

Leashed Tracking Dog Handler

 

Leashed tracking dog handlers use their dogs to track and recover dead, wounded, or injured big game. Leashed tracking dog handlers provide a valuable service in aiding hunters in locating wounded big game that otherwise may go unrecovered. To qualify for a Leashed Tracking Dog Handler License, applicants must:

• score 80 percent or higher on the written exam; and
• possess a valid New York State hunting license.
  

A leashed tracking dog study guide is available from DEC at no cost on the DEC Leashed Tracking Dog License webpage. While the exam is free, first-time license applicants have a non-refundable $25 license application fee. The five-year leashed tracking dog license is $50.
