Statement from NYGOP Chair Ed Cox in Remembrance of the October 7 Attacks on Israel

"Today, we remember the tragic attacks on Israel that took place on October 7, 2023, a day of unspeakable violence that ignited a war for Israel’s very existence. The brutal assault on innocent civilians serves as a stark reminder of the existential threats Israel continues to face, as it stands as a beacon of democracy in a hostile region. We must ensure that Israel receives our full support as it defends itself from those who seek its destruction.

"As we honor the lives lost, we must also confront the rising tide of anti-Semitism that has infiltrated too many corners of our society — especially on our campuses and in our urban centers. These manifestations of hate are not only an assault on Jewish Americans but an affront to the values that unite us as a free and tolerant nation.

"The Republican Party stands resolutely with Israel and the Jewish people, as we always have. We are proud to be the party that champions Israel's right to defend itself and its citizens, and we remain committed to ensuring that our nation stands strong against any threat to our shared values of liberty and justice.

"In this moment of war and mourning, let us reaffirm our commitment to combatting anti-Semitism in all its forms, to supporting Israel’s right to exist in peace and security, and to fostering an unbreakable bond between our two nations."

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland Statement Marking One Year Since Hamas’s October 7 Terrorist Attacks in Israel

The Justice Department issued the following statement marking one year since Hamas’s October 7 Terrorist Attacks in Israel:

“Today, Monday, October 7 will mark one year since Hamas terrorists murdered nearly 1,200 people, including more than 40 Americans, kidnapped hundreds of civilians, and perpetrated the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.

As made clear by the charges we recently unsealed against Yahya Sinwar and other senior leaders of Hamas, the Justice Department is committed to pursuing the terrorists responsible for murdering Americans — and those who illegally provide them with material support — for the rest of their lives. We are targeting every aspect of Hamas’s operations, and our work is far from over.

We are also committed to continuing to combat the disturbing rise in the volume and frequency of threats against Jewish, Muslim, Arab, and Palestinian communities here in the United States that we saw in the wake of last year’s attacks. The Justice Department has responded forcefully to these threats, and we have no tolerance for unlawful acts fueled by hatred of any kind.

We also recognize that as we mark one year since the attacks, we do so at a time when millions of Jewish Americans are observing the High Holidays. Today, and every day, the Justice Department reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that Jews in this country feel safe and are protected. No person and no community should have to live in fear of hate-fueled violence, and the Justice Department will aggressively investigate and prosecute criminal acts and threats of hate whenever and wherever they occur.”

Mayor Adams Speaks at NYPD Gospelfest at Coop-City

Saturday October 5th was the NYPD Gospelfest at Coop-City with a filled auditorium of celebrators. Mayor Eric Adams was scheduled to attend and say a few words, but his arrival was late due to traffic coming up to the Bronx from midtown where he marched in the 40th Annual Korean American Parade.

When he arrived Pator Gooding introduced Mayor Eric Adams to an almost standing ovation. The mayor opened his sermon by saying "I hope my life is an open book." He then spoke of his childhood where he was diagnosed with dyslexia and how he was able to overcome it by becoming a police officer and then on to becoming mayor of the greatest city.

Mayor Adams added that when he came into office there were many areas that needed help, he then said that he came to a Matthew moment. He said that he turned the table over at City Hall, speaking of some of his accomplishments like lower gun violence, higher test scores, and more new businesses.

Mayor Adams said that he is an outer borough mayor who has come to the Bronx more than any other mayor. He went to Rikers Island to be Baptized, and this is who he is, a bald headed man. "When people say step down, He will step up," he said. Mayor Adams ended by saying he loves the city, and all of those in the audience.

On his way out Mayor Adams stopped to pose for a few photos with some attendees, and I was able to ask him "with all that is going on and more opposition to his City of YES for Housing in the City Council, was he ready to withdraw the proposal?" Mayor Adams answered by saying "any council member who is opposed to the City of YES is against housing."

Mayor Adams then took a few questions, one of which was my question about the future of his City of YES for Housing.

Weekly News from State Senator Gustavo Rivera!

GOVERNMENT HEADER

STATEMENT ON GOV. HOCHUL'S SELECTION OF CDPAP FISCAL INTERMEDIARY

This week, Senator Rivera issued a statement in response to Governor Kathy Hochul's announcement that the Executive has selected a Georgia-based company, Public Partnerships LLC (PPL), as the statewide fiscal intermediary for New York’s Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program (CDPAP), which provides essential home care services to approximately 250,000 New Yorkers. Senator Rivera has serious concerns about this selection, citing PPL's track record of failing to pay workers on time. Additionally, in other states where PPL was chosen, those states transitioned away from the company, negatively impacting enrollees.

Senator Rivera will continue to advocate for his legislation (S9901) to address the problems with the current program. His reaction to this announcement was covered by POLITICO and Crain's.

SENATOR RIVERA ATTENDED "A DAY TO REMEMBER" AT THE BRONX JEWISH CENTER

Senator Rivera attended a memorial at the Bronx Jewish Center for the one-year anniversary of the October 7th attacks on Israel. We mourn the innocent people who lost their lives on October 7th and all those lost in the ongoing war in the past year in the Middle East. We hope every day that every hostage is released unharmed. We must unite in our efforts to create a world without war, one where no one suffers from the horrors of conflict and terror. Thank you to Rabbi Pewzner and the Bronx Jewish Center for inviting Senator Rivera to this memorial.

Senator Rivera visited Sun River Health in the Bronx this week. The Senator had the opportunity to see firsthand the positive impact their services have on the lives of those they serve. During the visit, Senator Rivera met with healthcare professionals, toured the facilities, and engaged with patients and staff to better understand the challenges and successes of their mission.

Senator Rivera had the opportunity to discuss the issues federally qualified health centers (FQHC) face across New York State. That is why he carries the bill S6959A to update the current reimbursement rates for FQHC's that have not been updated since the year 1995. In order for community health clinics across New York to continue to serve patients, we must ensure they can stay open in medically underserved communities throughout our State. Thank you to Anne Kauffman Nolon, Chief Executive Officer, and Ernest Klepeis, Chief of Government Affairs and Advocacy, for the invitation.

Senator Rivera was pleased to join the Riverdale Y’s annual Rosh Hashanah luncheon to celebrate the Jewish New Year. Thank you to Melissa Sigmond, Rabbi Scott, and the Riverdale Y for inviting Senator Rivera and thanks to the wonderful seniors for coming together in joy and community. To all our neighbors celebrating Rosh Hashanah, Shana Tovah!

Senator Gustavo Rivera hosted a free housing clinic at our district office in partnership with the West Bronx Housing and Neighborhood Resource Center (WBHNRC). Neighbors received information on housing, rent, Section 8 renewals, repairs, and more! Thank you to WBHNRC and Ms. Grace Torres for assisting the neighbors who came to our office.

This week, Senator Rivera hosted a Meet & Greet on the NY Health Act with neighbors. Senator Rivera answered questions and discussed the benefits of the NY Health Act, which would guarantee health care to every New Yorker by creating a single-payer, universal health care system based on New Yorkers' ability to pay. Senator Rivera shared that we can improve the quality of care by taking private health insurance out of the equation and putting patients before profits. Thank you to Bronx House for providing the location and facilities for this Meet & Greet!

Senator Rivera attended the first Bronx Tech Hub Job Fair at Fordham University, organized by Fix It With Piggy. This fair was a success with over 300 attendees! These spaces are so important for young people in our community to network and gain access to the tech world. Thanks to Ashonda Culcleasure, founder of Fix It With Piggy, for inviting Senator Rivera to this wonderful event!

The Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School, a new five-story building located at 647 Elton Avenue in Mott Haven, Bronx, recently celebrated its groundbreaking with a ceremony led by New York Knicks legend Earl ‘The Pearl’ Monroe. The school, which is located near the intersection of Third Avenue and East 152nd Street, is being developed by Pillar Property Management. It was designed by ESKW/Architects and IMC Architecture.

When complete, the 69,000-square-foot building will feature state-of-the-art athletic and learning environments, including an 8,000-square-foot gymnasium, 27 regular and specialty classrooms, a library and media production studio, and a dedicated broadcast studio with a green screen. The third through fifth floors will primarily house classrooms.

“This groundbreaking is a celebration of two years of hard work by an incredibly talented real estate, design and construction team. I extend my gratitude and congratulations to the school, our joint venture partner David Damaghi, IMC Architecture, ESKW/Architects, JV Construction & Consulting, Brisa Builders and Bank of Hope, which provided a $21 million construction loan for this $35 million project,” shared Pillar Property Management principal Kiumarz Geula.

Permits Filed for 123 Eames Place in Kingsbridge Heights, The Bronx

Permits have been filed for a four-story mixed-use building at 123 Eames Place in Kingsbridge Heights, The Bronx. Located between Webb Avenue and Claflin Avenue, the lot is near the Kingsbridge Road subway station, serviced by the 4 train. Gil Broitman of Brooklyn Grid is listed as the owner behind the applications.

The proposed 45-foot-tall development will yield 8,137 square feet, with 4,656 square feet designated for residential space and 3,481 square feet for community facility space. The building will have seven residences, most likely rentals based on the average unit scope of 665 square feet. The masonry-based structure will have a daycare on the ground floor but no accessory parking.

Xiucheng Li of Bayside Engineering is listed as the architect of record.

Demolition permits will likely not be needed as the lot is vacant. An estimated completion date has not been announced.
