ABOUT

I N C L U S I V I T Y . C O M M U N I T Y . A W A R E N E S S . E M P O W E R M E N T

The 1 Bronx Pride Festival promotes inclusion, community, and dialogue and works toward a future without discrimination where all people have equal rights under the law. We do this by producing Pride events that inspire, educate, and celebrate our diverse Bronx community.

The 1 BRONX PRIDE FESTIVAL is produced by the Third Avenue Business Improvement District in partnership with Destination Tomorrow, Boogie Down Pride, OUT Bronx, the LGBTQ Caucus of the Bronx Borough President, Dancing in the Streets, Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, and Clearview Festivals. The Third Avenue Business Improvement District (aka Third Avenue BID), established in 1988, promotes the growth, vitality and visibility of the Bronx’s most trafficked commercial corridor. The organization is the Bronx’s oldest BID and serves over 200,000 individuals daily. Organizational programs include economic development, real estate advisory and retail services, sanitation and security departments that augment the city’s own services, small business development services, streetscape and open space improvements, horticulture installations, robust public programming, event planning, and visitor services. The catchment area includes over 200 businesses, expected to grow to 900 businesses by 2019, Roberto Clemente Plaza, Triangle Equity Plaza, the HUB Transportation Center, Lincoln Hospital, Metropolitan College of New York, and several arts and cultural institutions. The Third Avenue Business Improvement District also administers merchant organizations in Port Morris along Bruckner Boulevard to 138th Street. MISSION Our mission is to keep one of New York City’s most trafficked commercial districts clean, safe, attractive and well programmed for businesses, employees, community residents, and visitors while leading a mission-driven campaign to demand equity for the South Bronx.

The 1 Bronx Pride Festival culminates on June 23, 2019 at 149th Street and Third Avenue in the Bronx with a multi-block street festival that celebrates the diversity of the borough. The festival feeds on the energy of workshops, trainings, gallery openings, street performance, and film screenings which lead to performances on two stages and at Roberto Clemente Plaza.

EVENTS
The 1 Bronx Pride Festival is more then just a one-day event. The festival's purpose is to celebrate and empower area residents and neighbors through a series of community-based productions which then culminate in a spectacular multi-block street festival on Sunday, June 23, 2019. The festival and events leading up to it promote inclusivity, community, awareness, and empowerment.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark today announced that her office, along with the New York City Police Department, Safe Horizon, the NYC Administration for Children’s Services and the New York City Fire Department, will host the third annual Bronx Child Safety Fair. The event will allow families to hear from experts on safety concerns, obtain a free New York State Safe Child Identification Card, and enjoy a day filled with games, music and other fun activities.

The Child Safety Fair, which marks Child Abuse Prevention Month, will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at St. Margaret Mary School, located at 1914 Morris Avenue, between East 177th Street and East Tremont Avenue. Children ages 3 to 13 and their families are encouraged to take part in the event.

District Attorney Clark said “Keeping Bronx children safe is a top priority, and learning how to prevent harm towards our kids is extremely important. We had great turnouts for our first two fairs, and I hope you will join us this year for this educational, fun event.”

The fair will cover a wide range of safety topics, including bicycle safety, bullying prevention, tips on staying safe while surfing the Internet, safe sleeping for infants, and safe/unsafe touching. Assistant District Attorneys will be on hand to answer questions.

Van Naes Neighborhood Alliance Meeting April 1, 2019

The April Monthly Meeting of the Van Nest Neighborhood Alliance was held Monday night with Guest Speaker Deputy Chief Inspector Chuck Holzinger talking about fire safety in your home. Pictured above (L - R) are VNNA Treasurer John Messenger, VNNA President Bernadette Ferrara, Deputy Chief Inspector Chuck Holzinger, VNNA Senior Advisor Bob Nolan, VNNA Secretary Marion Manfredi, and VNNA Vice-President Sharlene Jackson-Mendez.

Deputy Chief Inspector Holzinger spoke about changing the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms every year, and that new alarms are hitting the market where when the alarm goes off a person will not be able to just take out the battery to turn off the alarm, but the alarm will be sealed and have a battery life of ten years.

He spoke about buying new hair dryers and irons every few years, because the filament wears out and can become a fire hazard. Electric extension should not be overloaded especially in the hot weather months when the electricity level drops as demand increases. A surge in power when the demand drops can be a cause of fire if these extension cords are not able to handle the surge of electricity. He warned about cheap wire strip plug in electric extenders, and said make sure that what you buy has the UL tag for safety.

Representatives of local elected officials gave community reports, and the NCO officers went over a few calls in the area that were handled by the 49th Precinct including a mentally disturbed person police had to take care of.

The next VNNA meeting will be on Monday May 6th with Postal branch managers from 10460, 61, and 62 in attendance to answer questions about local mail service. Friday May 10th is the Annual VNNA Dinner for more information call Bernadette Farrara at 917-498-5786 or Marie Santillana at 646-305-4913 for more information.

Monday May 27th the Annual Memorial Day Parade and services begin at noon in front of the Van Nest Memorial at White Plains Road and Van Nest Avenue.

WILLIAMS TO EXPLORE 2021 MAYORAL RUN - April 1, 2019

Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams today announced he would explore a run for Mayor in the 2021. Williams assumed office as the Public Advocate for New York City two weeks ago after winning a February 26th special election for the seat. He joins a crowded field of current and former elected officials vying to succeed Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is term limited.

Williams, who ran for Speaker in 2017, Lieutenant Governor in 2018, and Public Advocate in 2019, looks to pursue a robust campaign schedule through 2020 and 2021.

"When I stepped into my new office in the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building, I looked down at City Hall and thought 'I wonder what the view's like from there?'" said Williams in announcing his decision. "I like running, and I've gotten pretty good at it. I'll have my hands full running in this year's Public Advocate primary in June and general election in November, but after that I'm ready to dive in."

Council Member Brad Lander announced his support for Williams' candidacy, saying "He's running for what? Mayor? Sure, count me in."

The role of Public Advocate is seen as a natural stepping stone to becoming Mayor despite that occurring exactly once in history. Williams has sought to change that flawed perception, and believes he can do so by 2021.

Williams is not expected to immediately begin campaign events, first taking a trip to Iowa to discuss the prevalence of corn products in vegan cafes.

Should the Public Advocate ever leave his post to run for Mayor, a special election would be called to fill the position of Public Advocate, the winner of which would then need to run in a primary and general election the following year. If the winner of that race is a current elected official, there would be a special election to replace them, and that victor would then join the Public Advocate on the primary and general ballot, thus ensuring New York City has plenty of opportunity to realize the need for electoral reform.

"I want to be the voice of the people, and despite my constant assertions that I will not be running for Mayor in 2021, the voices of the people continue to ask the question. So I've changed my answer," said Williams.

He added, "I look forward to continuing to serve as your Public Advocate through 2021 and wish everyone a happy April Fool's Day."

Claudette Colvin Day March 2, 2019

Sheikh Musa Drammeh Host of the Claudette Colvin Day event held at St. Helena's Church 1315 Olmstead Avenue in the Parkchester section of the Bronx, Saturday March 2, 2019 opened with the following.

Dear New Yorkers,
It is snowing in New York today. But if she could stood her ground in exercising her “Constitutional Rights” at the tender age of 15 on Wednesday, March 2, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama for us to sit-down, we shall defiantly celebrate her world-changing day under any weather conditions. Claudette Colvin Day.

Ms. Claudette Colvin was to have a street renamed for her, but complications at City Hall will make that happen in the spring or summer when the weather will be much warmer and nicer, with the hope that Ms. Colvin will be able to see the street co-naming. The other problem was that Claudette Colvin is not well as she approaches her 80th birthday. Organizers of Claudette Colvin Day, and having a street co-named in her honor would like to have Ms. Colvin present to see the street being renamed for her.

Father David of St. Helena Church gave the opening prayer. Assemblyman Jose Rivera then went on to say that it was people like Claudette Colvin who are the unsung heroes of the Civil Rights Movement, and it is people like Ms. Colvin who children do not know was the first person, not Rosa Parks to refuse to give up her seat on a bus in an unrespectful time in the south to people of color.

Recently elected Parkchester Assemblywoman Karines Reyes said that she is a nurse who is a rabble rouser, and that Jose Rivera is a trouble maker.

Councilman Andy King sent his Bronx District office manager (and Yo-Yo Wizard) Brian Melford with a certificate of recognition of Ms. Claudette Colvin.

Parkchester District Leader John Perez who was at last years Claudette Colvin Day where Ms. Colvin received a flag that flew over the capital from the previous congressman, brought his daughter Emma with him. District Leader Perez said that he is teaching his young daughter about icons like Claudette Colvin, because it is very important that children know who really made the history, and that those people don't always get the credit they deserve.

This event was presented by Project Peace Lights.

Above - Assemblyman Jose Rivera speaks about the history of Claudette Colvin, and Assemblywoman Karines Reyes added to what Assemblyman Rivera said.
Below - Councilman Andy King's Bronx District office manager talks about the Certificate of Recognition he brought from Councilman Andy King for Ms. Colvin.

Above - Parkchester District Leader John Perez brought his daughter Emma up on stage with him. He said that it is important for young children to know the real events that happened like Ms. Colvin being the first Black woman not willing to give up her seat in the 1950's, and not just what is written in history books that Rosa Parks was the first Black woman not willing to give up her seat.
Below - A survivor from the Rwanda Genocide of young girls spoke of the importance of speaking up and not allowing one to give in to the pressures young girls face today.

#1 TRAIN WILL BYPASS 168TH ST. STATION BEGINNING TOMORROW, SATURDAY, JANUARY 5, 2019

"I want to let constituents and riders of the #1 Train to know that beginning at midnight on Saturday, January 5, the #1 train will bypass 168th St. Station in Washington Heights for approximately one year while four new elevators are constructed. I will be onsite at the 168th St. Station tomorrow, January 5, 2019, at 12:00PM (Noon) to monitor the additional bus service that will be provided to accommodate riders needing to access 157th St. Station to catch the 1 train. I have the commitment of the MTA that they will be actively observing the bus service so that it meets the needs of riders and also will have additional staff available to answer questions from the public.

MTA has stated that they will finish the construction around early 2020. I've requested that this reconstruction project finish on-time, and if possible, reduce the total duration of the project. Additionally, while the new automatic elevators will be able to accommodate a higher volume of subway riders, the elevators will not extend to the subway platform. I've asked the MTA to conduct a feasibility assessment on options to bring the 1-train platform to ADA compliance."
