The Journey of Two Peoples, a Celebration of Jewish and Hispanic Cultures

From left: Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, State Senator Gustavo Rivera, Assemblyman Marcos Crespo, Congressman Eliot Engel, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., Consul General of Israel in New York Ambassador Ido Aharoni and Council Member Andrew Cohen
It was a celebration of the Jewish Holiday Sukkot, and Hispanic Heritage Month at the  Salanter Akiba Riverdale (SAR) Academy last night.
The event—sponsored by the Consulate General of Israel in New York, the Office of Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and JCRC-NY—highlighted the Jewish and Hispanic peoples' experiences with migration, and underscored how each community's exodus has uniquely shaped them today.
Consul General of Israel in New York, Ambassador Ido Aharoni remarked, "In celebrating the holiday of Sukkot this year, we not only reflect upon the story of the migration of the Jewish people and the temporary dwellings they lived in, but we also remember the difficult personal exodus so many Latinos faced when immigrating to the United States."
"Just as the Jewish people in Israel carried with them their heritage and culture, so too have the Latinos who have come to this country," Aharoni added. "Both of our communities have understood that preserving a rich heritage while building a new home is paramount to ensure a meaningful future."
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.  "This was an amazing event, one that brought together the Latino and Jewish communities of not just The Bronx but the entire City, both of which have played important roles in reshaping their communities. This evening not only helped ring in the Jewish Holiday of Sukkot and celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month, it also offered our Latino and Jewish communities a chance to bond through stories, music and even Kosher Mexican food. Both groups left realizing that they share a lot more in common than a date on the calendar, and it is my sincere hope we can replicate this event in the future."
“There are many parallels between our Jewish and Hispanic cultures that we must celebrate and embrace, and in a city like New York, it’s imperative that both communities support one another, said Congressman Eliot Engel “As the Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the AJC Latino Jewish Caucus, I am committed to further strengthening the ties between our two communities. Together, we can advance our common goals and our shared vision for the future.”
Rabbi Michael S. Miller, Executive Vice President and CEO, Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, “Sukkot is a joyous festival made all the more jubilant by the coming together of family and friends in the sukkah, a temporary dwelling with a thatch roof commemorating the 40 year journey of the Children of Israel during Biblical times from slavery in Egypt to nationhood in Israel, the Promised Land. The sukkah is also viewed in Jewish tradition as a singular symbol of peace, Sukkat Shalom. As Jews celebrate their spiritual heritage, we are doubly blessed to peacefully gather together in the sukkah this evening with sisters and brothers from the Hispanic community, who have experienced their own journeys, as they celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. May the festival of Sukkot continue to serve as a binding force bringing Jews, Hispanics and New Yorkers of all faiths and ethnicities closer together.”

Rabbi Michael S.Miller welcomes every one to the Jewish festival of Sukkot, and Hispanic Heritage Month at SAR.

The front row included (L -R) Ambassador Ido Aharoni Consul General of Israel, State Senator Gustavo Rivera, Councilman Andrew Cohen, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, State Senator Jeff Klein,  Congressman Eliot Engel, and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

Community Updates From Council Member Andrew Cohen

Capital Grants Allow for Various Park Projects Within The District
As your elected official, I understand the importance of providing quality amenities in the community. Over the course of recent months, I have been able to secure various capital grants to allow for the enhancement of our local parks.
On July 23rd, I announced that I would be using $750,000 of capital funds for the construction of a skate park to the Williamsbridge Oval will give the skateboarders of the community a safe place to enjoy practicing their many skills.
In conjunction with State Senator Jeff  Klein, I was thrilled to announce this summer the combined allocation over $4 million in capital grants secured in this year's state and city budget for the following park projects:
  • Comprehensive renovation of Indian Field in Woodlawn. This renovation project will include the construction of a new field, as well as completely reconstruct an existing field that suffered from chronic flooding.
  • The construction of a new playground in Van Cortlandt Park near the Riverdale Stables. This is an area of the park that was lacking recreational space for the youth of the community to enjoy; we are confident that this new addition will draw more families to this beautiful space and utilize every portion of the park.
As a member of the Parks Committee, I am proud to be a part of these major improvements that will finally allow residents to utilize our parks to their fullest capacity once again.

Participatory Budgeting Comes to The Bronx
This past year, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, announced the expansion of participatory budgeting for the 2014-2015 fiscal year. The expansion more than doubles the number of participating districts and includes District 11.
Participatory Budgeting is a process that will allow residents of District 11 to directly decide how to spend $1 million of taxpayer money. From now until April 2015, members of the community are encouraged to attend our Participatory Budgeting meetings to exchange ideas that will then be turned into proposals. The community will then have an opportunity to vote on these proposals in May 2015.
Anyone who is over the age of 14 can participate in the process, but only local residents 16+ can vote.

Assemblyman Dinowitz, Montefiore Medical Center, Walgreens Pharmacy Sponsoring Flu Shots at Riverdale YM-YWHA on October 24

Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz is pleased to announce that he is sponsoring a second day of flu shots for members of the community in the 81st Assembly District. Flu shots will be administered on October 24 at Riverdale YM-YWHA on 5625 Arlington Avenue between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. This service is also sponsored by Montefiore Medical Center, Walgreens Pharmacy, Congressman Eliot Engel, State Senator Jeff Klein, and Council Member Andrew Cohen.

Flu shots will be administered at no cost to the constituent, though participants are asked to bring their insurance card.

“I am pleased to partner with Montefiore Medical Center and Walgreens to offer this important service to the community,” said Assemblyman Dinowitz. “The flu is a serious health matter, and getting a flu shot protects not just yourself but also your friends, family, and neighbors. I encourage everyone to contact my office about getting a flu shot.”

“Flu and pneumonia account for 2,200 to 3,000 deaths a year in New York City, the third leading cause of death. Vaccination is safe, effective, and the best way to prevent getting the flu -- yet only half of New Yorkers report getting a flu shot. Montefiore is excited to partner with Assemblyman Dinowitz and Walgreens to ensure that Riverdale residents have access to flu vaccines at no cost to them. It's a great way to take care of yourself and your family,"said Amanda Parsons, M.D., M.B.A., vice president of Community & Population Health, Montefiore Medical Center.

“The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that every adult get a flu shot, and annual flu shots from Walgreens are a quick and effective way to protect you and your family from the most common influenza viruses each year,” said Morton D. Shaw, Walgreens Pharmacy Supervisor.

Please note that members of the community must be 18 years of age or older to participate, and cannot be allergic to eggs. Residents MUST contact Assemblyman Dinowitz’s office at(718) 796-5345 to guarantee a flu shot.

Assemblyman Dinowitz also partnered with New York Presbyterian and the Visiting Nurse Service of NY to sponsor flu shots at St. Gabriel’s Church on October 8

Assemblyman Dinowitz will be getting his yearly flu shot on Oct 8th at St. Gabriel's Church.
