CRESPO INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO STHRENGTHEN BACKGROUND CHECKS ON UBER DRIVERS

  Proposed law would ban level 1, level 2, and level 3 sex offenders from applying and working for mobile transportation applications such as Uber, Lyft, and SideCar

ALBANY, NY  (04/14/15) --  Today, Assemblyman Marcos Crespo, chair of the Assembly Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force, announced he has introduced legislation (A. 6864) that will improve the safety for consumers using mobile transportation applications such as Uber, Lyft, and SideCar. 

Recent and growing accounts of violent crimes and rapes committed by drivers of these transportation networks has shed light into faulty background checks by Uber and the like. In order to help reduce the incidents of sexual assaults perpetrated on passengers, the new legislation goes beyond the faulty background screening processes used by mobile application transportation networks by simply prohibiting one set of individual who have exhibited dangerous criminal behavior from any participation in the workforce of these transportation systems.

According to Crespo, “The most heinous of crimes reported by drivers of said transportation systems all involve rape and even murder by drivers who had been screened but had long criminal records which were simply overlooked, ignored or missed.  Every action that policymakers can take to increase public safety should be acted upon diligently.  This is the case with this proposal.”

By adding level 1, level 2 and level 3 sex offenders to those prohibited from applying and working as “independent contractors” for Uber, Lyft and the like, this legislation will effectively reduce the threat to consumers that they will become crime victims.

Crespo added, “Major news organizations have conducted investigative reporting which has uncovered faulty background checks by Uber and the like.  This in turn has allowed individuals with violent criminal histories to work as drivers in these transportation systems.  This set of events and actions has placed countless consumers in harm’s way.”

In addition, and also of major concern is the fact that these “independent contractors” are inadequately insured leaving potential victims without proper compensation if an accident occurs.

Council Member Andrew Cohen Kicks-Off the Participatory Budget Vote by Casting His Own Ballot

  On Sunday, April 12th Council Member Andrew Cohen cast his participatory budget ballot during at the Riverdale YM-YMHA along with dozens of other District 11 residents. The event at the Riverdale YM-YMHA was the first voting opportunity for the District.

Participatory Budgeting gives residents decision-making power of $1 million towards community improvement projects in their neighborhoods. During this week, residents in the community will be able to see all the proposals on the ballot, as well as place their votes on which projects they think deserves funding the most. There are a total of 11 proposals this year, focused on renovations to schools, parks and libraries throughout different neighborhoods. Anyone who lives in the district, 16 years and older are welcome to vote; all that is needed is proof of residency.

This week is the culmination of yearlong efforts by community leaders and volunteers dedicated to the Participatory Budgeting initiative. Council Member Andrew Cohen will submit spending priorities to City Council, including the winning PB projects. A total of twenty-four council members are participating this year, giving communities all over the city decision-making power of more than $25 million.

Members of the community still have opportunities to vote throughout the week. The district office, located at 277 West 231st Street, will also serve as a permanent voting location until Friday. Office hours are Monday – Thursday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m, and Friday 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM.

NBA Legend Dolph Schayes to be Inducted Into the Bronx Walk of Fame

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. announced today that NBA legend Dolph Schayes will be inducted into the 2015 Bronx Walk of Fame.

“We have a long tradition of producing basketball legends in The Bronx, and Dolph Schayes is one of those greats that laid the foundation for future generations,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “He is a pioneer who was among one of the league’s first stars, and his popularity helped to build the NBA into the juggernaut it is today. His ability to drive to basket, from the power forward, as well as hit lethal two-handed set shots over most defenders made him a force to be reckoned with in the NBA.”

“I am honored to be inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame,” said Schayes. “Growing up in The Bronx made a huge impact on my life and made me who I am. This borough is very special to me and I am very grateful to be recognized by Borough President Diaz.”

Schayes grew up on Davidson Avenue and 183^rd Street, near Jerome Avenue in University Heights, attended Creston Junior High School 79 and DeWitt Clinton High School (1945–48), where he led the basketball team to the borough championship.

After playing for New York University – where he won the Haggerty Award, given to the All-Metropolitan New York Division 1 men's college basketball Player of the Year – Schayes went on to play for the Syracuse Nationals (who would later become the Philadelphia 76ers). There he enjoyed a stellar career appearing in 12 NBA All-Star games, being named into six All-NBA first teams and winning the NBA Championship in 1955 helping defeat the Fort Wayne Pistons in seven games.

Schayes, who was a player-coach for the Philadelphia 76ers in 1963, eventually took his talents to the sideline and earned an NBA Coach of the Year award in 1966.

For his contributions to the game and the league, Schayes was named into the NBA’s 25th Anniversary Team, the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team, and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972. He was also inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, the U.S. National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, and the National Jewish American Sports Hall of Fame.

Dolph Schayes will be officially inducted to the Bronx Walk of Fame as part of the 44^th annual Bronx Week, a program of The Bronx Tourism Council. Bronx Week is an annual highly-anticipated 11-day event where the entire borough, including government, business, and the community-at-large, come together to celebrate “The Best of The Bronx” through festivals, concerts, health fairs, parades, performances and a host of other activities.

Bronx Week 2015 will take place from May 7-17. At the end of the 11-day celebration, our hometown heroes like Schayes are inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame, where their names are emblazoned on a street sign to reside on the historic district of the Grand Concourse forever.

ECPW Wrestling at St. Francis Xavier School

  Last night ECPW Wrestling cane to St. Francis Xavier School for the Annual Wrestling event. It may not have been Hulk Hogan or John Cena, but the wrestlers who fought did their job as good as any other wrestlers.Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine , and others like 'Crazy Ivan, Ghetto Brown, Frankie Flow, and the tag team 'The Disrespectors to name only a few of the many wrestlers who appeared. The photos below will tell the story of the matches.
  On another note i was told that enrollment at St. Francis and other fine Catholic schools in the area is down. It seems that as the Morris Park Area evolves new people to the area are choosing other options such as Charter Schools or even the public schools to send their children.

MALIK YOBA NAMED TO BRONX WALK OF FAME

  Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. announced today that actor Malik Yoba would be inducted into the 2015 Bronx Walk of Fame.

“It is a good day in the Bronx to know that Malik Yoba, an actor and activist who was born in this great borough, will be honored during Bronx Week, have his name on the Bronx Walk of Fame and be greeted by thousands of Bronxites,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.”

Born Abdul-Malik Kashie Yoba in the South Bronx, he is most recently known for his role in Fox’s new drama, Empire, a hip-hop drama centers on a music industry heavyweight who is about to take his company, Empire Entertainment, public.

“This is an honor to be inducted into the ‘Bronx Walk of Fame,’ a borough that taught me the values of life and giving back to the community,” said Malik Yoba. “I strive to live a purpose-filled life and I truly want to express my deepest thanks to Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. for this wonderful recognition.”

His acting career started with a small education film, which lead to starring roles in memorable movies and television shows, including the 1993 Disney classic, Cool Runnings, and the hit Fox television series New York Undercover.

“As a writer, director, producer, musician, educator, and so much more, Malik Yoba truly tackles his daily quest to educate young people in communities across the world and this is the reason why we are shining the light on his name,” says Borough President Diaz. “It is individuals like Malik that makes the youth believe that anything is possible.”

STATE SENATOR JEFF KLEIN, THROGGS NECK HOUSES RESIDENTS’ COUNCIL & COMMUNITY BOARD 10 HOST FIRST EVER SPRING COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP DAY IN THE BRONX

Klein, Local Volunteers, Police Service Area #8 Explorers Join Together to Beautify Throggs Neck Houses

State Senator Jeff Klein together with Assemblyman Benedetto, the Throggs Neck Houses Residents’ Council, Community Board 10 and volunteers from the Police Service Area #8 Explorers, today held the first ever spring community clean-up day at the Throggs Neck Houses in the Bronx. Senator Klein co-sponsored the event, joining in the fun with local volunteers as they collected trash and debris, cleared walkways and picked up after the long winter.

“Today, we are facing a crisis of affordable housing in New York City – not only is there limited availability for New Yorkers in need, but our public housing has been left in a state of disrepair and neglect,” said Senator Klein.  “By working together in the spirit of community to clean up the Throggs Neck Houses, we are providing local residents with a cleaner, greener place to call home. A special thanks to Assemblyman Benedetto, the Residents’ Council, Community Board 10 and all the volunteers who came out, joined in the fun and got their hands dirty for our spring cleanup.”

The Department of Sanitation, in partnership with Community Board 10, donated garbage bags, brooms, rakes, shovels and an array of cleaning supplies for the event. Volunteers kicked off the morning at the Residents’ Council’s office with donuts and coffee and departed to one of the 29 buildings in the complex shortly after. Everyone broke for lunch at noon, munching on hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and cupcakes. All attendees participated in an exciting raffle, with a chance to win fun prizes like a brand-new bike and gift cards to target.

"By hosting our first ever Throggs Neck Houses community clean-up day, we are encouraging residents and volunteers to get involved and make a difference right here at home," said Monique Johnson, President of the Throggs Neck Houses Residents' Council. "The simple fact is, a cleaner community creates a unified community, stronger community and a loving community. Thanks to Senator Klein, Assemblyman Benedetto, Community Board 10, Resident Engagement and the Police Service Area Explorers we are ready for spring!"

As New York City’s public housing stock has faced a significant decline in recent years, community beautification projects play a vital role in ensuring NYCHA developments are safe, secure and sanitary. In this year’s state budget, Senator Klein secured $100 million in funding for New York City public housing, representing the largest investment in NYCHA in more than 15 years.
