For a very different performance experience, join us in Wave Hill House for a movement- and sound-based performance by Zachary Fabri, one of the exhibiting artists in This Place We Once Remembered, up in Glyndor Gallery till August 6.

Free with admission to the grounds
Registration is encouraged but not required; online or by calling 718.549.3200 x251

Cinema of Volant Petals is a new movement- and sound-based performance by Zachary Fabri commissioned by Wave Hill as part of the exhibition This Place We Once Remembered. A collaboration with a pianist, cameraman and cinematographer, the performance weaves together historical record, fiction and personal memory using flowers as a libretto. Responding to the architecture of Armor Hall, the work is at once a live performance and deconstructed film set. Flowers serve as narrative and symbolic devices that speak to our entangled relationship to the human and natural worlds and to the liberatory possibilities of flight.

Close Encounters: Aquatic Plants for Fish and Friends
Free with admission to the grounds

Come “eye to eye” with some of the creatures and plants that call the Aquatic Garden home. Learn what our resident goldfish love to eat and who else they share their home with.

Fresh off her double Grammy win—Best Jazz Vocal Album and the auspicious Best New Artist award—23-year-old, Bronx-born and raised Samara Joy returns to Wave Hill for a bespoke outdoor concert that’s not to be missed! With her Grammy Award Winning Verve Records debut, Linger Awhile, Samara makes her case to join the likes of Sarah, Ella and Billie as the next mononymous jazz singing sensation. Praised for “helping jazz take a youthful turn” (The New York Times), her voice, rich and velvety yet precociously refined, has already earned her fans like Anita Baker and Regina King, appearances on the TODAY Show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, CBS Mornings, MSNBC, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Drew Barrymore, and more, in addition to millions of likes on TikTok—all cementing her status as perhaps the first Gen Z jazz singing star.

This concert will take place on the Great Lawn. Visitors may bring folding chairs and blankets. Picnicking is permitted. The Café and Shop are open until 7PM.

In the event of poor weather, this performance will move indoors with limited seating capacity. Ticketholders must have purchased a “Rain or Shine” ticket to be granted admission indoors. Ticketholders will be notified by email if the concert moves indoors and "Shine only" tickets will be refunded.

Governor Hochul Urges New Yorkers to Prepare for More Heavy Rain and Potential Flooding Sunday and Monday

Potentially Heavy Downpours with Rainfall Rates of One to Two Inches Per Hour Could Result in Flash Flooding

Flood Watches Currently in Effect for Parts of Capital Region, Mid-Hudson, New York City, and North Country Regions

Storms Could Bring Up to Four Inches of Rain by Monday and Cause More Flooding in Areas Previously Impacted by Heavy Rain

Governor Urges New Yorkers to Monitor Weather Conditions and Prepare for Possible Flooding

Governor Kathy Hochul today urged New Yorkers to prepare for additional severe weather expected to impact most of the state Sunday through Monday as rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast for parts of the Capital, Mid-Hudson, Mohawk Valley, North Country, and Southern Tier regions, as well as New York City. Localized flooding is expected in urban areas, roads, and small streams. Rainfall over already saturated ground could result in possible flash flooding Sunday into Monday. Governor Hochul urged New Yorkers to pay attention to their local forecast and sign up for emergency alerts.

"Throughout the weekend, parts of the state will continue to be at risk for flooding from storms bringing heavy rain, especially in those areas already hard-hit by rains and flooding over the past couple of days," Governor Hochul said. "State agencies will stay ready to respond to local requests for assistance throughout the weekend. I urge everyone to keep a close eye on the weather and be sure to plan activities accordingly."

For a complete listing of weather alerts and forecasts, visit the National Weather Service website at https://alerts.weather.gov.

New Yorkers are encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts by subscribing to NY Alert at alert.ny.gov, a free service providing critical emergency information to your cell phone or computer.

Severe Weather Safety Tips

Disaster Supplies

Have disaster supplies on hand, including:

  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Battery-operated radio and extra batteries
  • First aid kit and manual
  • Emergency food and water
  • Non-electric can opener
  • Essential medicines
  • Checkbook, cash, credit cards, ATM cards

Flash Flooding

  • Never attempt to drive on a flooded road. Turn around and go another way.
  • If water begins to rise rapidly around you in your car, abandon the vehicle immediately.
  • Do not underestimate the power of fast-moving water. Two feet of fast-moving flood water will float your car, and water moving at two miles per hour can sweep cars off a road or bridge.

Lightning

  • Follow the 30-30 rule: If the time between when you see a flash of lightning and hear thunder is 30 seconds or less, the lightning is close enough to hit you. Seek shelter immediately. After the last flash of lightning, wait 30 minutes before leaving your shelter.
  • Lightning hits the tallest object. If you are above a tree line, quickly get below it and crouch down if you are in an exposed area.
  • If you can't get to a shelter, stay away from trees. If there is no shelter, crouch in the open, keeping twice as far away from a tree as it is tall.

Tornado

  • If outdoors and a Tornado Warning is issued, seek shelter immediately. If there is no shelter nearby, lie flat in a ditch or low spot with your hands shielding your head.
  • If at home or in a small building, go to the basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of the building. Stay away from windows. Closets, bathrooms, and other interior rooms offer the best protection. Get under something sturdy or cover yourself with a mattress.
  • If in a school, hospital, or shopping center, go to a pre-designated shelter area. Stay away from large open areas and windows. Do not go outside to your car.
  • If in a high-rise building, go to an interior small room or hallway on the lowest floor possible. Do not use elevators - use stairs instead.

NYS Office of the Comptroller DiNapoli: State Pension Fund Releases Annual Investment Return

Office of the New York State Comptroller News

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today announced that the New York State Common Retirement Fund’s (Fund) investment return was -4.14% for the state fiscal year that ended March 31, 2023. The Fund closed the year valued at $248.5 billion.

“Recent months have been trying for investors, but thanks to the state pension fund’s diverse investments, members, retirees and beneficiaries can rest assured their pensions are secure,” DiNapoli said. “There is no doubt that challenges lie ahead, with concerns over a recession and potential interest rate increases, but the state pension fund is well positioned to weather these storms.”

The Fund's value reflects retirement and death benefits of $14.7 billion paid out during the fiscal year. Employer contribution rates are determined by investment results over a multi-year period along with numerous other actuarial assumptions, including wage growth, inflation, age of retirement and mortality. Integral to the Fund’s strength have been the state and local governments, which consistently pay their contributions.

As of March 31, 2023, the Fund had 44.14% of its assets invested in publicly traded equities. The remaining Fund assets by allocation are invested in cash, bonds and mortgages (21.53%), private equity (14.61%), real estate and real assets (13.39%) and credit, absolute return strategies and opportunistic alternatives (6.33%).

Investment Returns

The Fund’s long-term expected rate of return is 5.9%. The Fund’s annual valuation date is tied to the state fiscal year.

The New York State Common Retirement Fund is one of the largest public pension funds in the United States. The Fund holds and invests the assets of the New York State and Local Retirement System on behalf of more than one million state and local government employees and retirees and their beneficiaries. It has consistently been ranked as one of the best managed and best funded plans in the nation.
