Councilman Andrew Cohen who is a frequent visitor to the Riverdale Senior Center in his district brought City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito on his visit Thursday. The two toured the senior center, but that was not the reason for the visit. The speaker brought with her a story of how many plastic bags are used by people, what the result is when they get thrown out, and had a different option for these seniors. Speaker Mark-Viverito brought with her several boxes of reusable bags for the seniors, which were given out. One question from the seniors was - so what am I going to use now to put my garbage in? It was explained that with recycling and composting now in the community the amount of garbage would be much less.
Above - City Councilman Cohen and Speaker Mark-Viverito talk to a few seniors who are in a hot Scrabble game.
Below - Councilman Cohen holds in his hand one of the reusable bags being given out tothe seniors, as Speaker Mark-Viverito is holding an unfolded reuseable bag.
City Council Speaker Mark-Viverito explains the new city five cent bag tax, and the exceptions to the new law. I was told that these reusable bags are made in the U.S.A.
