Dear Friend,
I am reaching out because I know you understand that safe and adequate housing is a critical priority in our communities and wanted to share information found in my housing-related reports that might interest you.
Findings from recent publications include:
- Homelessness grew by 53.1% from January 2023 to January 2024, more than four times the rest of the nation.
- Inadequate oversight of a New York City rental assistance program is leading to significant delays in finding permanent housing for homeless people and those at risk of homelessness.
- The New York State Division of Human Rights failed to properly investigate dozens of housing discrimination cases, undermining its mission to eliminate injustices and promote equal opportunity.
- Management at three Mitchell-Lama developments in New York City failed to provide a safe and clean living environment for residents, and they misspent funds.
- Almost three million New York households are dealing with housing costs that consume more than 30% of their household income, with 1 in 5 households experiencing a severe cost burden, with more than 50% of their income going to pay for housing
I invite you to explore all of our publications at osc.ny.gov/reports, and if you are not already receiving my Weekly News, please subscribe! As always, feel free to reach out and let us know what is on your mind at contactus@osc.ny.gov.
Thank you for your engagement and concern for the ongoing housing crisis—and for sharing OSC’s commitment to government accountability, transparency and sound fiscal decision-making.
Sincerely,
Thomas P. DiNapoli
State Comptroller
