We are so grateful for you, and all those who support Van Cortlandt Park Alliance! Together we make our park beautiful, accessible, and a welcoming space for our community. Each year there are always a few park advocates who go above and beyond the call of duty, and we celebrate them at our Springtime Shindig.
This year, we are proud to present our Betty Campbell-Adams Park Angel Award to Herb Barret, a community member whose constant devotion ensures that Van Cortlandt Park’s Memorial Grove stands as a living tribute to Bronx service members. Herb is a local hero who serves on the CB8 Veterans Affairs Committee, volunteers in the Grove, and is a Korean War Veteran.
Our annual Cultivating the Bronx Award will be presented to James Hendon, Commissioner of NYC Veterans’ Services. During past Veteran’s Day celebrations, James helped VCPA honor Armed Forces veterans at Memorial Grove and supported maintaining its beauty. He is a leader whose agency fosters purpose driven lives for US Military Service Members and their caregivers, survivors, and families. James and his family visit Van Cortlandt Park often and enjoy its many splendors.
We hope you will join us in honoring these two veterans whose dedication to servicemen honored at Memorial Grove made change in our park. Please consider buying a ticket to or supporting our Springtime Shindig. You can also visit Memorial Grove to see what wonderful work we can do together.
