Tuesday night the 49th Precinct Council met for its first meeting in the Fiscal Year 2026 (the New York City Fiscal Year runs from July 1st to June 30th). Most of the old council returned, and new commanding officer Captain Julieann Stapleton was introduced, making a huge impression to those in attendence. She also had the Q-Team (Quality of Life Team) at the meeting.
The Cop of the Month was Police Officer Teresa Tartarone who at White Plains Road and Lydig Avenue captured three robbers and recovered a loaded firearm. Crime prevention Officer Gomez gave some vital car tips on how to keep parts of your car from being stolen.
State Senator Gustavo Rivera and Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson stopped in and spoke. For the first time in over two years there was a treasurers report, which was inconclusive, as there was no report on how the $25,000.00 councilmatic grant to the council in FY 25 or $5,000.00 grant from Assemblyman Zaccaro for National Night Out was spent.
The neighborhood reports by the community associations was not on the agenda, whereas the council President said she decided not to have them anymore. That resulted in nineteen speakers during the gallery session where comments included an all night party in Van Nest that the resident said was closed out after the third call, and the captain said she would check on the call. That was followed by the elected official representative reports, after which the meeting was adjourned.
