Join us for the 3rd Annual Hatsuhinode—the Japanese tradition of welcoming the first sunrise of the year—on a peaceful hike through the winter landscape of Van Cortlandt Park. Led by Yoshiko Mori and Noel Hefele, this event offers a quiet space to reflect, connect with nature, and celebrate fresh beginnings.

Forest Fridays
Fridays, January 9, 16, 23 and 30 - Meet at 10am
Help restore Van Cortlandt Park’s vital northwest forest by removing invasive plants like multiflora rose and bush honeysuckle. Your efforts will create space for native plants to thrive and support long-term forest health.
Meet at VCPA Learning Garden
Mulchfest
Saturday, January 10 and Sunday, January 11 - 10am to 2pm
Recycle your holiday tree by bringing it to Van Cortlandt Park, where the VCP Forest Restoration Crew will chip it into mulch!
Trees can be dropped off prior to Mulchfest. For more information about drop-off locations throughout the city, visit NYC Parks’ Mulchfest page.
Event held in the “free lot” near the Van Cortlandt Golf Course. As you drive in from Bailey Avenue, it will be the first parking lot on your left.
Van Cortlandt Nature Group Walks
Sunday, January 11 at 10am meets in front of Nature Center
Friday, January 16 at 2pm meets in Riverdale Stables parking lot
Take a slow walk in the park and learn about local flora and fauna with naturalist Debbi Dolan. Debbi has a wealth of knowledge about nature, plants, and wildlife that she enjoys sharing.
