The East Bronx History Forum will be meeting on Wednesday, March 18th at 7:30 pm in St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf.

Dear East Bronx History Forum Member,

The East Bronx History Forum is pleased to welcome Mark D. Patrick, Superintendent of St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf (SJSD), as a featured presenter for our monthly meeting highlighting leadership, education, and the enduring role of SJSD in Bronx history. This month’s History Forum meeting will be on location at St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf.

St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf was established in 1869 by the religious order of the Society of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary. The school’s first home was in the West Bronx near 184th Street in the Fordham section. The small school building soon outgrew the demand for enrollment and a second branch opened in Brooklyn in 1874. The need for the education of deaf boys opened yet another branch in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx known as Oakland Cottage in 1876.

By 1913, the increase in population of deaf children resulted in the opening of the school’s present building. Since then, the striking red brick building has been an impressive landmark in Throggs Neck.

Our lecturer, Mark D. Patrick is originally from North Carolina and has 30 years of experience in special education and 20 years specifically dedicated to Deaf education and school leadership. Formerly, he was Superintendent at the North Carolina School for the Deaf, a position he held from 2020 to 2025. Presently, at SJSD, he has played a key role in shaping the school’s Strategic Plan. His leadership emphasizes accessible excellence, literacy development, and personal independence for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

The East Bronx History Forum will be meeting on Wednesday, March 18th at 7:30 pm in St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf. The school’s location is 1000 Hutchinson River Parkway. There is parking in the front and left side of the school building.
