Detective Was Stabbed 10 Times During Apparent Robbery
Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark today announced that two men have been indicted for allegedly stabbing an off-duty New York City Police Detective while robbing him of his jewelry.
District Attorney Clark said, “These defendants allegedly robbed an off-duty NYPD detective and stabbed him multiple times when the officer resisted. This vicious attack on a dedicated member of our law enforcement community is unacceptable. Now, they will have to answer for their crimes.”
District Attorney Clark said that defendants Sneider Mejia, 24 and D’Angelo Caraballo, 25, both of the Bronx, were arraigned today on Attempted Murder, Robbery and related charges by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Alvin Yearwood. Both defendants were remanded. They are due back in court on December 3, 2026.
According to the investigation, on October 2, 2026, at approximately 1:43 p.m., near the corner of East 208th Street and Rochambeau Avenue, New York City Police Detective Jose Mercedes, was unloading items from his vehicle while off duty. Mejia allegedly approached the victim at knifepoint and attempted to remove two gold chains from his neck, before Caraballo approached and grabbed both chains. Detective Mercedes resisted and told his attackers that he was a New York City Police Officer. The defendants then allegedly stabbed Detective Mercedes ten times in the neck, arms and torso before fleeing on an e-bike with one of his chains. The victim was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi where he underwent emergency surgery. Mejia and Caraballo fled to Massachusetts, where they were arrested on October 7, 2026.
District Attorney Clark also thanked NYPD Detective Nanakwame Mensah of the 52nd Precinct Detective Squad, Detective Jonathan Arteaga of the Bronx Homicide Squad, and members of the 52nd Precinct Detective Squad and Bronx Homicide Squad for their work in the investigation.
An indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
