NHL Stadium Series at Yankee Stadium

  The 161st Street BID has a unique celebration planned in tandem with the upcoming NHL Hockey series at Yankee Stadium.The BID has commissioned Shinarto Okomoto to carve a statue of Yankee pitching great Mariano Rivera. Okomoto is an international renowned ice sculpter who's work has been featured in the media and on the Grammy Award broadcast.

  The sculpture will honor the pitcher celebrating the renaming of River Avenue in his name and enhance the beauty of the district said Dr. Cary Goodman Executive Director of the 161st Street bid. The date is Sunday January 26th starting at 10 AM.

TOWN HALL MEETING ON SOCCER STADIUM

 

   Residents, soccer fans, merchants, community organizations and elected officials will have a chance to discuss a proposal to build a soccer stadium on River Avenue at 157th Street.

    The 161st Street BID will be hosting a meeting on January 15 at 7:30 PM at 900 Grand Concourse (161st Street) to provide everyone a chance to express themselves on this topic.

   “This is a chance to gather the thoughts and feelings of the community,” noted Dr. Cary Goodman, the BID’s executive director. “The Town Hall Meeting will give opponents and those who want a new stadium a chance to share their opinions and hear others.”

    The meeting is open to the public and free.

    Participating organizations and institutions include The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Community Board 4, Mid-Bronx Senior Citizens Council,The Highbridge Life Center, Bronx Health Reach,  South Bronx United, Hostos Community College and The Bronx Council on Environmental Quality.

JETER METER RETURNS

   The Jeter Meter is back! The LED sign which counted down the Yankee Captain’s quest for 3,000 hits has been re-installed in front of his portrait on River Avenue and 161st Street.

  “The Jeter Meter brought the team and the fans together” said Dr. Cary Goodman, the 161st Street BID’s executive director, “We want to return to that spirit this year.”  Jeter has 3,152 hits and is just three away from passing George Brett and moving into 14th place on the hits list.

  For the past month the Jeter Meter has been the centerpiece of the highly-acclaimed, BASEBALL IN THE BRONX exhibit, at The Bronx Museum. 

 
  “The Jeter Meter will keep track of Derek’s hits and give Yankee fans a chance to wish him and the team, Good luck,” Goodman said.

Baseball in the Bronx Exhibit

  Last year the theme of the exhibit at the Bronx Museum was the "History of the Negro Leagues". This year the theme of the baseball exhibit at the Bronx Museum is "Baseball in the Bronx". What does "Baseball in the Bronx" mean you might ask, and "Baseball in the Bronx" refers to anything Baseball that happened in the Bronx.
  This could mean anything New York Yankees (Bronx Bombers), or it could mean little league baseball played in the Bronx, or it could mean high school or college baseball played in the Bronx, or anything to do with playing the game of baseball in the borough of the Bronx, as you will see from the photos below.
