Tour de Bronx - SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2016

Tour de Bronx is a bicycling event established in 1994 by the office of the Bronx Borough President and The Bronx Tourism Council as a means to promote a healthier lifestyle, an alternate mode of transportation and a way to tour the burgeoning neighborhoods, scenic waterfronts and greenways of the borough.

Participants choose from one of two rides. The 25-mile route takes riders through the south, east and mid portion of the borough including the Mott Haven district, Clason Point along the East River, and the largest park in New York City: Pelham Bay Park boasting nearly 3,000 acres of natural forest. The 40-mile route includes a visit to the historic Fort Schuyler on the Throggs Neck peninsula, the nautical community of City Island and the northern portions of the borough like Woodlawn and Riverdale. Both rides conclude at the iconic New York Botanical Garden where riders receive a complimentary souvenir T-shirt and enjoy a live musical performance as they relax from the day’s festivities.

Throughout the years, the event has grown exponentially and is regarded as the largest free cycling event in New York State. In 2014 the Tour de Bronx saw a record-breaking 7,600+ participants from all over the country as well as a few who come from abroad.

Dirty Tactics in Politics

First, with the Bronx Voice on vacation this week I did not want you the reader to miss this column as the Bronx Democratic primary draws near.  A few key races are heating up, and you need to know more about them.
First up is the 33rd State Senate race. Here incumbent Gustavo Rivera is facing the toughest challenge of his short political tenure. Now he beat his opponent two years ago, but this is a different Fernando Cabrera from two years ago. The big difference is that candidate Fernando Cabrera is being funded by a pro Charter School PAC to the tune of up to Two-Hundred Thousand dollars according to Candidate Gustavo Rivera. So why would this worry the incumbent if he defeated his opponent before?
When Gustavo defeated the incumbent years ago he had a PAC give him Two-Hundred Fifty Thousand dollars, and he knows that money talks and BS walks. I am not saying that Senator Rivera is not a good elected official, but just look at his district. Has the district improved since he took office, and how? Also remember that his opponent is the city councilman who covers a good part of the state senate district, and that while there are no more state discretionary funds, a city councilman gets Five Million New York City dollars in Discretionary funding to dole out.
Senator Rivera is trying hard for his constituents, but when you have an informational session on SNAP (the old food stamp program) with fellow State Senator Liz Krueger, do it in your district in the Bronx (where your constituents need it), and not in the posh Manhattan district of your mentor. To be fair, there was the Kingsbridge Armory story about Councilman Cabrera holding out his endorsement, but it appears that the Ice Center proposal is all but dead.
On to the 78th Assembly District race. This race is getting nasty now, as incumbent Jose Rivera's minions are now not only going after his opponent, but also me. Comments have gone up on facebook by two of his supporters that I am on the payroll of candidate Ischia Bravo, that I am a crook, that I am a racist, and that I hold power over elected officials. I showed these comments to Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. last night at the Chubby Checker Concert, and he said to ignore them. He added that he pays no attention to facebook chatter.
Well Assemblyman Jose Rivera we have known each other for over twenty years, and it is you who is trying to be bully here as you have in the past. I will let everyone know the reasons why you should not be re-elected. Be a man Assemblyman Jose Rivera, since you have no record to run on just hang it up. I expect more of what has been going on from you towards me, and keep doing what you are so you can lose the election.

The Bronx Voice

You may be asking what is the Bronx Voice, and it is the newest newspaper to hit Bronx streets. For those of you who liked the old Bronx News or Parkchester News the former editor of both newspapers has begun his own newspaper the Bronx Voice. You may notice some familiar  items in the Bronx Voice such as this column. The preview edition of the Bronx Voice arrived this past week, and the Bronx Voice will be published weekly starting the first week of May.
To see my predictions of the presidential race on both sides, and just why Ted Cruz and John Kasich came to the Bronx you will have to pick up the Bronx Voice. I will go over the results of the New York Presidential Primary later this week here.
As for local politics, in the 78th Assembly race two hatchet men of Assemblyman Jose Rivera are trying to end the candidacy this year's primary challenger Ischia Bravo by repeating a New York Post story that says Ms. Bravo is to be questioned about the Bronx Democratic County organization. A certain spy for Assemblyman Jose Rivera has gone one step further than the Post by adding more to the story on his facebook page, and here is my comment since I can not put it on his facebook page.
I did my own story on the Bronx Democratic County organization last year right after a story by the New York Times did a story of possible wrongdoing by the Bronx Democratic County organization. The Times story focused on the Bronx Democratic County Leader Assemblyman Carl Heastie, but I went further and focused on other parts of the Bronx Democratic County organization. As a matter of fact I was at the Bronx Democratic County organization office one day when former Assemblyman Nelson Castro (while he was wired by the former Bronx DA and U.S. Attorney's office) tried to get information from Ms. Ischia Bravo. We see that either there is incompetence at both judicial departments, or there was nothing to be gotten from Ms. Bravo. I was there, I saw a wired U.S. Attorney agent (former Assemblyman Nelson Castro) try to get information, and there was nothing to be gotten from Ms. Ischia Bravo.
By the way it was former Bronx Democratic County Leader Jose Rivera who helped Nelson Castro win in the 86th Assembly district. It was also former Bronx Democratic County Leader Jose Rivera who ran with former State Senator Pedro Espada, and while the condoms given out may have said vote for Pedro Espada the palm cards said vote for Pedro Espada for state senate and Jose Rivera for Assembly.
I have many more Jose Rivera stories that could fill a book. In fact one day Assemblyman Jose Rivera said to me "we should write a book about all the things we know about Bronx politics, it would be a best seller". Now that this column is back in print in the Bronx Voice, 'One never knows what may happen next in politics'. My advice to Jose Rivera, enjoy your retirement.

New York Counts This Year

Tuesday April 19th is the presidential primary date for New York, and this is a year where both the Democratic and Republican races in New York could impact on just who gets nominated. That is why all of the candidates in both parties are criss-crossing New York State looking for votes. On the Republican side it seems as though all congressional districts matter since a candidate can pick up New York delegates even in a almost Republican free district such as is the case here in the Bronx. That could be the reason that Republican Presidential candidate Ted Cruz came to the South Bronx to meet with State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. who claims to be a Conservative like Cruz. The only problem candidate Cruz is that State Senator Diaz Sr. (at last look) is a Democrat, and as for being a Conservative I checked with the Chair of the Bronx Conservative Party Bill Newmark on that. Mr. Newmark wanted to know why Senator Diaz has not come to the Bronx Conservative Party for an endorsement so far this year, and Mr. Newmark also wanted to know why Senator Diaz did not ask for the Bronx Conservative Party endorsement in the last election in 2014.
Speaking of the Bronx, it seems that the Bronx Democratic County organization seems to be pulled in different directions also. State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. who is no stranger to the Republican Party, entertained Republican Presidential candidate Ted Cruz this past week. The next day his son Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. had a visit from Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in front of Yankee Stadium. The two then hopped on the subway after Clinton had a little trouble getting through the turnstile. It took her five swipes of the Metro Card she had to get a good swipe which let her on to the platform. Unlike Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders who grew up in Brooklyn and thought tokens were still in use on the NYC subway system Clinton at least was told that tokens were no longer in use. However when Sanders came to the South Bronx over 18,000 people came to see him, and Bronx Assemblyman Luis Sepulveda who has been called a twin to Bronx Democratic County Leader Marcos Crespo is supporting Sanders.
Back on the Republican side John Kasich did his best impression of Bill de Blasio when eating pizza in New York, using a fork to eat the pizza. My predictions on the presidential race will appear in Wednesday's 100 PERCENT column in the new Bronx newspaper that will premier on Wednesday April 13th.
As for the race to replace Charlie Rangel in congress petitioning ended today. Since the primary election for congress is on June 28th there is time to see just how many of the seven candidates make it on to the ballot. Sometime in late June I will put out my prediction, but it now appears to be a two person race between Manhattan Democratic County Leader Assemblyman Keith Weight and State Senator Adriano Espaillat who is running for the third time, but first time for an open congressional seat.
Don't forget that on Wednesday April 13th you will find this column in a new Bronxwide newspaper. You can also continue to check this blog for updates, and the listing of events and reports of them.
If you have any comments about this column or would like to have an event listed in this column or on my blog you can e-mail us at 100percentbronxnews@gmail.com or call 718-644-4199 Mr. Robert Press.
