Starz will present three of its upcoming series at a panel on Friday, October 11, 2013 during New York Comic Com including the Ronald D. Moore executive produced, highly anticipated new series “Outlander,” based on The New York Times bestselling novels penned by Diana Gabaldon; season two of the David S. Goyer historical adventure “Da Vinci’s Demons” and the much awaited pirate drama “Black Sails” from the mind of Jonathan E. Steinberg, executive produced by Michael Bay.

“Black Sails” had its first debut at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2013 where fans were given a sneak peek at the first episode. The series was extremely well received and is sure to be welcomed by the masses following its January premiere. After a successful first season, “Da Vinci’s Demons” returns with all new twists and betrayal. This will be the first presence for “Outlander,” a series based on a book whose fans wait with bated breath to see how Jamie and Claire’s tale will be brought to the small screen.

Steven Smith of MTV Geek and popular iTunes podcast “Going Off Track” will moderate the panel. Smith previously hosted Fuse’s IMX, the network’s first live music/talent interview show, which became Daily Download.  Following Download, Smith was awarded his own daily program: Steven’s Untitled Rock Show, which ran an amazing 700 episodes.

ABOUT “Outlander”
The “Outlander” series spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history, and adventure in one grandiose tale. It follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

                “Da Vinci’s Demons” Season Two
Florence is thrown into chaos in the wake of the Pazzi conspiracy, so Leonardo da Vinci pushes the limits of his mind and body to defend the city against the forces of Rome.  When the dust settles, friends are buried and rivalries enflamed.  While the Medicis go to unthinkable lengths to deal with new threats, da Vinci continues on his quest to find the fabled Book of Leaves and uncover the secret history of his mother.  He'll come to realize that he has lethal competition in his quest -- new enemies who may be even worse than the forces of Pope Sixtus.  His search will take him to faraway lands and force him to reevaluate everything he knew about the world and his own history.

“Black Sails”
The pirate adventure “Black Sails” centers on the tales of Captain Flint and his men and takes place twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic “Treasure Island.” Flint, the most brilliant and most feared pirate captain of his day, takes on a fast-talking young addition to his crew who goes by the name John Silver. Threatened with extinction on all sides, they fight for the survival of New Providence Island, the most notorious criminal haven of its day – a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers, a place defined by both its enlightened ideals and its stunning brutality.

“Black Sails” will debut with an eight-episode season in January 2014, exclusively on STARZ.

Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

This came in from Assemblyman Luis Sepulveda 87th A.D.

As many are aware, breast cancer is the most common, and second deadliest form of cancer that affects women. The percentage of women who become afflicted with this disease are especially high amongst women of color-the very women I represent. Studies also show that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer sometime in their lifetime.

It is crucial that more people-both women and men- get tested, it also calls for more studies to be done. This is why it is an important initiative to offer mammography screenings to the very women in my community who may not have access to these services.

Please join me and my staff, as we host a local Breast Cancer Walk on October 3, 2013 to commemorate the women who have struggled and fought against breast cancer. The walk will begin on Castle Hill Avenue in the Bronx and end in front of my office on Westchester Avenue, where a van will be parked to offer Mammograms in an attempt to bring attention to this issue and offer a way in which we can together, fight against this disease.

I am confident that these changes can help reduce the prevalence of cancer within my area. If you have questions concerning this event, please contact the district office.

Senator Klein and UFT President Michael Mulgrew Announce $700,000 Grant for 16 ‘Community Learning Schools’ Citywide

Standing in front of the steps of P.S. 83 on Rhinelander Avenue in the Bronx, Senator Klein and United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew announced a $700,000 grant, secured by the State Senate in the 2013-14 budget, for the New York City Community Leaning Schools Initiative. This grant will be used to fund 16 community learning schools during the 2013-14 school year, including P.S. 83, P.S. 14 and the International School for Liberal Arts in the Bronx. The grant was advocated and secured by Senator Klein and his colleagues in the 2013-14 State Budget.

Senator Jeff Klein said, “As elected officials, we have a duty to ensure our children receive a first-rate education. Community Learning Schools take this one step further, by providing schools with the resources they need to help students and their families meet the tough challenges outside the classroom. These schools will be able to provide college counseling, tutoring, cultural programming or even health services, allowing the school community to decide which services best fit their needs.
“Community learning schools are a great step forward for education in New York, since students and their families will no longer get held back by the types of real-life issues that too often stand in the way of success in the classroom.”

“The way to make an impact on students’ lives is to put the services that can make a difference – things like health and dental care, social services, support for families – where children and their families can take advantage of them, in city schools. This is the way to really help children, and I want to thank Senate Majority Coalition Leader Jeff Klein for making this happen,” said United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew.

The NYC Community Learning Schools Initiative is a non-profit organization that works to identify public schools where educators, staff and the parents collaborate to transform schools into community “hubs” by bringing in outside volunteers, businesses, organizations and health services. Schools currently working with the Initiative have established school-based health and dental clinics, youth development programs, tutoring, food banks and other services. By integrating these services with an academic environment, students will receive the care and have the resources needed to succeed.
Selected schools were chosen to participate after submitting proposals to the NYC Community Learning Schools Initiative. Along with P.S. 83, P.S. 14 and the International School for Liberal Arts, other schools to receive funding through the grant secured include P.S. 335 in Brooklyn, P.S. 1 in Manhattan and Queens High School for Information, Research and Technology.
In 2012, the United Federation of Teachers, with support from the New York City Council, the Partnership for New York City and Trinity Wall Street launched the NYCCLSI. The NYCCLSI facilitates partnerships between schools, non-profits, business and government to connect vital services to public school buildings, improve student achievement and meet the health, safety and social service needs of students and communities.

P.S. 83 Principal Brandon Muccino said, "P.S. 83 has a long history of community involvement so it’s only fitting that a community school grant be implemented here. This neighborhood thrives on the after-school programs that this school provides to both students and parents, so to see that Senator Klein acknowledges this makes it special for everybody involved.  It is our hope that this grant will bring sustainable programs that will thrive for years to come."

Left - Senator Klein mentions that he was a product of Bronx public schools as he is joined by UFT President Mulgrew, P.S. 83 Principal Brandon Muccino, P.S. 14 Principal Ira Schulman and students from P.S. 83.
Right - UFT President Michael Mulgrew thanks Senator Klein for his part in the getting of more funds to the schools that were selected to share in this state grant.
While Senator Klein and UFT President Mulgrew hold the check for $700,000.00 the children of PS 83 give it the thumbs up.

LIU ON CALIFORNIA’S MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE

,
City Comptroller John C. Liu stated the following on the signing of AB 10, which will increase California’s minimum wage to $10.00 per hour:
“We applaud California’s leaders for reaching an agreement to raise their state’s minimum wage to $10.00 per hour. As pay continues to lag behind the cost of living and corporate profits, increases in state and local minimum wages are an ever more important way to help struggling families make ends meet. In New York City — the nation’s most expensive major city — we continue to call for a minimum wage of $11.50 per hour, which would lift roughly 200,000 New Yorkers out of poverty and put $2.4 billion into the pockets of workers who need it most. We look forward to continuing to work with our colleagues in Albany to realize these changes in the weeks and months to come.”

STATEMENT FROM LHOTA CAMPAIGN ON DE BLASIO UNIFORMED FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION ENDORSEMENT

September 25, 2013

While accepting the endorsement today of the Uniformed Firefighters Association union, he fondly--and in considerable detail--recounted his 2003 fight to keep firehouses Engine 204 from closing and claimed to have prevented future firehouse closures. What Mr. de Blasio failed to mention in his remarks today was his position four years later, where he called the closure of the very same firehouse and the closing of another Brooklyn firehouse “fair and balanced.”

“Mr. de Blasio’s revisionist history is becoming a pattern in this campaign. The inconsistencies of his positions and remarks are increasingly troubling and raising serious issues about what voters can trust.” --Jessica Proud, campaign spokeswoman

Bill de Blasio today: “Starting with the fight in 2003 to save the firehouse in the district I represent down in the city council… Engine 204 in Cobble Hill.  That fight to me just for the point of reference, that was the first time I was arrested on a municipal issue in this city.  That fight for me really was crucial because we stood up, gave our residents and the men and women who do the work, all of us stood shoulder to shoulder. You know that year we lost a few firehouses, but we didn’t lose them again after that.  And I think its no small measure due to the incredible fight that people put up in neighborhoods that were affected all over the city.  And then when the cuts were proposed year in and year out we kept coming back stronger every year.”

But, on May 16, 2007, a Daily News headline read: FIREHOUSE ACCORD STRUCK. Engine 204 to be leased, Engine 212 sold; 'Fair and balanced outcome,' de Blasio sez
"This is a fair and balanced outcome," Councilman Bill de Blasio said at City Hall.
