Klein Announces Funding Grant for New Women’s Wellness Program at Riverdale Senior Services

Comprehensive wellness program open to Bronx women over 60 to start in September

State Senate Coalition Co-Leader Jeff Klein announced a $100,000 grant he secured for Riverdale Senior Services that will go towards a newly created Women’s Wellness program open to women across the Bronx.

While weekly wellness sessions have already started, a comprehensive 10-week program featuring fitness classes and a self-assessment component will launch in the fall. The program will be based on the federal program SHE (Strong. Healthy. Energized.), specifically designed for women 60 and over and is designed to benefit women of all ranges of mobility.

The announcement was made directly following a weekly wellness session in the exercise room where the program will primarily take place. At the announcement, Senator Klein was joined by Riverdale Senior Services Executive Director Julia Schwartz-Leeper, Geriatric Social Worker Patricia Werlau, LMSW and participating seniors.

State Senator Jeff Klein said, “The research is clear: developing healthy habits now will help fend off mental and physical issues later. That’s why I am proud that Riverdale Senior Services, which has been a touchstone of senior health and well-being in the Riverdale community for decades is launching a Women’s Wellness Program for local seniors. With the grant I secured, RSS will provide education tools and programming tailored for older women, while also giving participants a forum for focusing on their health in a fun, open environment. RSS’ program will go a long way towards arming older women with the tools, time and resources essential to creating a healthy, balanced lifestyle.”

Today’s announcement marked the second grant in a row secured by Senator Klein for Riverdale Senior Services. The initial funding has been used to refurbish the exercise room, computer lab and create walking/running track on the terrace.

Riverdale Senior Services Executive Director Julia Schwartz-Leeper said, “On behalf of Riverdale Senior Services, I am proud to launch this comprehensive wellness program for older women. Here at RSS, we have seniors who fall within a 40 year span, 75 percent of whom are women. I believe that this program, which would not have been possible without Senator Klein, will provide concrete, instruction and direction for the participating women. With this new wellness program, RSS is demonstrating that we offer a true range of programming for our seniors and I encourage women from across the Bronx to contact us to learn more.”

Patricia Werlau, Geriatric Social Worker, LMSW, Riverdale Senior Services said, “I have been privileged to work with a group of resilient woman these past several months. We have met weekly identifying wellness goals and supporting one another to achieve individual goals. The programs and services provided by RSS offer so many opportunities for healthy living and the grant money secured by Senator Klein had been put to good use as evidenced by the improvements in the facility and our new wellness program.”

Local seniors looking to learn more about the program can contact Andria Cassidy at Riverdale Senior Services by calling (718) 884-5900.

Board of Elections President Soumas Quits Before Possible Ouster

In the Daily News political Blog there is a story about the quick departure of Manhattan Democratic Board of Elections Commissioner Gregory Soumas before a possible ouster by City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and the city council. Soumas was appointed as the Manhattan Democratic Commissioner to the Board of Elections in 2005. There are 10 commissioners of the Board of Elections, two from each of the five boroughs, and one from each of the two major political parties. The 10 commissioners decide as to just who stays on the ballot, or who gets knocked off for not meeting the requirements of the Board of Elections.

In what appears to be a power struggle between City Council Speaker Mark-Viverito and Manhattan Democratic County Leader Keith Wright the speaker was about to use her power with the council to bypass the county leader to appoint a new commissioner from Manhattan after removing Soumas. The timing of his departure, right during petition season, was tough and should make it very hard to find a new commissioner with the qualifications of Greg Soumas one BOE insider said. It is not known right now just who will choose the new Manhattan Democratic BOE Commissioner, the county leader or speaker.

BP DIAZ ENCOURAGES BRONXITES TO ENROLL IN 'FOREVER GRAFFITI FREE PROGRAM

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. is urging all property owners to enroll in the City’s graffiti removal program, Graffiti Free NYC (GFNYC).  GFNYC is the City’s first ever, full-time, street-by-street graffiti removal program and is a service provided by NYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) on behalf of the City of New York.  The program provides NO COST graffiti removal to affected commercial, residential and industrial properties throughout the five boroughs.
“Graffiti is a blighted condition that changes the overall aesthetics of neighborhoods, often giving the impression that a neighborhood unsafe and ignored.  Graffiti decreases property values and discourages business investment and employment opportunities throughout the community.  I urge all property owners to take a few minutes to enroll in this program and help keep The Bronx clean and beautiful,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
By completing a “Forever Graffiti Free” form, property owners will authorize NYCEDC program staff to enter their property for the purposes of cleaning any accessible graffiti found on the property exterior. The one-time authorization covers all future graffiti at the specified location until consent is removed or property ownership is transferred.
“Graffiti turns lovely neighborhoods into eyesores. And no one wants to live in an area that’s been aesthetically vandalized. That’s why the Graffiti Free New York Program has become a critical tool to improving the quality of life in many communities around the city,” said Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia.  “I encourage all property owners to participate in the Graffiti Free NY Program to help keep their property clean of graffiti.  By working together, we can all make a difference for a cleaner, greener New York.”

Bronx Job Fair at Dewitt Clinton High School

Hundreds of people came to a Job Fair at Clinton High School hosted by Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj. There were dozens of companies looking for help, and several job service organizations including the New York State Department of Labor. The NYPD is looking for new people as you can see in the photo above, to become Police officers, School Safety officers, and Traffic Enforcement agents. You can go to NYPDRECRUIT.COM or call 212 RECRUIT to find out just when the next exam will be given, or for more details.

There were over 50 different Bronx businesses lined up for this job fair. Job were various in type, as I listened in on some of the talk between job seeker and possible employer. While there may not have been screams of joy in finding that job they wanted, there was that smile for making a possible future contact, and even that job that was gotten by some.

Resumes were gathered and will be gone over, so if you were one of a hundred who left a resume don't be surprised if the phone ring or you get an e-mail asking you to come in for a complete interview.

Shaw chronicles the effect of confinement on a woman’s mental state. In the Sun Porch space, Reade Bryan’s sculptural installation investigates the way that iconic building materials, such as plywood and drywall supplies, are created and used.
