Wave Hill is proud to announce the group exhibition Trees, we breathe, running from May 31 to September 1, 2025, in Glyndor Gallery and on the grounds. This exhibition is part of Wave Hill’s 60th Anniversary celebration and honors trees in all their splendor.
Featuring works by a diverse group of artists, including Sarah Ahmad, Andrea Bowers, Sari Carel, Michelle Frick, Ben Gould, Sara Jimenez, Weihui Lu, Julia Oldham, Yoko Ono, Rose B. Simpson, Yeseul Song and Jesse Simpson, Rachel Sussman, Carlie Trosclair, and Sam Van Aken, the exhibition explores various tree species through multiple media, including sculpture, sound, drawing, site-responsive installation, video, and living artwork. The artists delve into deep time, revisiting the ancient past while speculating on the future, considering trees’ unique independence and symbiotic abilities beyond an anthropocentric view of the forest ecosystem.
The exhibition also addresses the challenges trees face, including climate change, deforestation, development, and urban forest inequity. The artists thoughtfully consider and honor the ways in which trees care for many organisms, including humans, while recognizing our roles in their destruction and survival.
Wave Hill is home to some of the most notable trees in New York City, including a red oak (Quercus rubra) dating back before 1850, grand copper beech trees (Fagus sylvatica ‘Atropurpurea’), and a dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) that survived a lightning strike. As part of its anniversary milestone, Wave Hill is committed to ensuring the longevity of these existing trees while also planting new ones for future generations
