Wave Hill Weekly Events: Oct 19 – Oct 26 | Mushrooms, Owls & the Palisades!

 

It’s mushroom season! And Wave Hill is celebrating the world of fungi with an imaginative Fungi Fête that will delight the senses! Don't miss this unique opportunity to join us after-hours for an evening of dance, dinner and delightful conversation, featuring Dance Heginbotham’s You Look Like a Fun Guy and a four-course communal dinner highlighting the rich flavors of mushrooms. Come for a truly fun night out on Wednesday, Oct 25. Experience the beauty of fall at Wave Hill— and Wave Hill’s magical sunsets — in a whole new way,  

And if you’re really a night owl, and we mean that literally, come back again the following evening, Oct 26, for another first-time event. Join us for an exclusive adventure with falconer Brian Bradley and his spectacular live owls, followed by an evening Owl Prowl with local NYC bird guides in our gardens.

Registration is not required  

Join a knowledgeable Wave Hill Garden Guide for a leisurely stroll in the gardens. Topics vary by season and the expertise of the Guide—come back for an encore; each walk varies with the Guide leading it. This walk lasts a half-hour to 45 minutes. Severe weather cancels.

Solo and group exhibitions at Glyndor Gallery explore the dynamic relationships between nature, culture and site. When exhibitions are on view in the spring, summer and fall, Gallery Greeters lead public exhibition tours on Thursdays and Saturdays at 2PM. Visitors can expect an in-depth look at artworks on view in Glyndor Gallery and in the Sunroom Project Space, showcasing the work of both emerging and established artists in the unique context of a public garden. Each tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.    

Family Art Project: Revealing the Palisades

We all enjoy a beautiful view of The Palisades from Wave Hill. Discover the geology behind these magnificent cliffs as you use sand casting to create your own sculptural rock formation. At 11:30am families can enjoy a storytime program in the Gund Theater, all ages welcome.

Celebrate the shroom boom with a fun, imaginative and sensory evening of exploration, with an outdoor performance, communal four-course feast in majestic Armor Hall and lively conversation with Wave Hill's Associate Director of Horticulture Steven Conaway, PhD. Don't miss out on this extraordinary evening; it promises to awaken your senses and leave you with a newfound appreciation for the world of fungi! 

5:30PM Explore the Gardens 
The evening begins in the gardens with the rare opportunity to explore this world-class horticultural destination after-hours. 

6PM Outdoor Performance: You Look Like a Fun Guy 
Dance Heginbotham presents their adventurous project based on avant-garde composer John Cage’s relationship with mushrooms. Watch as dancers embody the spirit of fungi, exploring the limitless creative possibilities of landscape and gardens. This work-in-progress performance is the culmination of Dance Heginbotham's two-week residency at Wave Hill. 

6:45PM Conversation and Communal Dinner 
Take your seat in majestic Armor Hall for a communal feast with Dance Heginbotham. Enjoy a delectable, four-course tasting menu highlighting the rich flavors and textures of mushrooms, and experience a cocktail created specifically for this unique evening. Join Wave Hill’s Steven Conaway, PhD, in conversation with choreographer John Heginbotham as they explore how mycology connects the world around us, including— closer to home—gardening holistically at places like Wave Hill and following the fascination of fungi into dance itself. 

8:00 Sip & Savor 
Gather in Wave Hill House's historic Mark Twain Room to sip and savor the latest varieties of mushroom coffee and chocolate.

Nighthunters: Meet the Owls and Owl Prowl
$65, including admission to the grounds. Wave Hill members save 10%.

First time offered! Join us at Wave Hill for an exclusive adventure to engage with amazing owls of all shapes and sizes. Birders, nature lovers and thrill seekers are treated to a special after-hours experience as the sun sets over the Hudson and nocturnal creatures come to life. Falconer Brian Bradley and his spectacular live owls headline the evening with an exciting indoor program introducing these nocturnal birds of prey. Feel the wind brush your face as they fly silently inches above your head and get an intimate look at their adaptations and hunting techniques. Afterwards, venture outside with local NYC bird guides Gabriel Willow and Cindy Olsen to listen and look for resident owls on an “owl prowl” in the shadowy nighttime gardens. Bring your cameras for incredible close-ups! Ages 12 and older welcome with an adult (all participants must purchase a ticket).  Space is limited for this program.
