Dear Neighbor,
During my recent interview with News 12, I expressed our borough’s frustration over the proposed plans to open a new migrant facility for single adult men in the South Bronx. This decision, made without meaningful community engagement, adds to the inequitable burden our borough continues to face. The Bronx has always been a welcoming place for all, but we cannot continue to accept policies that undermine our residents’ well-being without a comprehensive plan, genuine community engagement, and necessary resources for our South Bronx families. You can click HERE for our full interview opposing this plan.
In a letter sent to Mayor Adams, we are calling on NYC to allocate 1% of the FY 2026 budget to the NYC Parks Department and prioritize tree planting in underserved areas like the South Bronx. The Bronx deserves its fair share of NYC’s tree canopy—a lifeline against rising heat, pollution, and increased health risks. Trees cool our neighborhoods, improve air quality, and protect lives in communities most at risk. Thank you to: Friends of Pelham Bay Park, Waste Management, Bronx Council for Environmental Quality, South Bronx Unite, Natural Areas Conservancy, and Van Cortlandt Park Alliance for joining us in this fight and advocacy for our Bronx green spaces. This is an environmental justice issue that we must address for the health and well-being of all Bronx residents.
Lastly, we are excited to announce the launch of the 2025 Community Board application process, and I encourage all residents 16 and older to apply! This is a unique opportunity for you to become the voice of your community and engage in the civic process. Serving on a Community Board is an impactful way to help shape decisions that affect your neighborhood. Click HERE to apply now!
As always, if you need support from our office, you can call 718-590-3500 or email us at webmail@bronxbp.nyc.gov.
In partnership,
Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson
