Construction is complete on The Frederick Shack Residence, a seven-story affordable and supportive housing development at 1405 Boston Road in Crotona Park East, The Bronx. Developed by Urban Pathways, the $38 million project yields 79 studio apartments. The property is located at the corner of East 170th Street.

The project replaces a former 29-unit supportive single-room occupancy facility that was demolished in early 2024. Former tenants were relocated to other permanent supportive housing facilities between 2022 and 2023. The new building is named for Frederick Shack, Urban Pathways’ longtime executive director, who died earlier this month.

The Frederick Shack Residence includes 55 apartments reserved for eligible individuals receiving on-site support services, with operating funding provided through the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative. The building also includes accessible and adaptable apartments, including eight units for residents with mobility impairments and four for residents with sensory disabilities. Amenities include a recreation room, common kitchen, and landscaped rear yard. The all-electric building was designed to meet Enterprise Green Communities 2020 standards and includes Energy Star appliances and a solar array.

The closest subways from the property are the 2 and 5 trains at the Freeman Street station.
