You may have heard concerns from health officials about an increase in monkeypox cases. This is not a new disease, but it has been spreading more quickly than normal in many countries.

This coming Monday, June 13, at 5:00 pm, I will be co-hosting an online interactive discussion with Council Member Erik Bottcher, State Senator Brad Hoylman, and health experts on the topic of monkeypox, what it means for NYC, and how you can protect yourself. You can RSVP here or click the button above.

To date, 10 likely cases have been identified here in NYC. Most of these individuals have had mild symptoms and have not required hospitalization. But even with mild monkeypox the rash and sores can be itchy and painful, lasting for 2-4 weeks.

Anyone can get and spread monkeypox, but the current cases are primarily spreading among men who have sex with men, so this group is now at greater risk of exposure.

If you think you may have symptoms of monkeypox (especially unusual rash or sores), separate from others immediately and contact a health care provider.

You can learn more about symptoms, treatments, etc on the NYC Dept of Health’s website: on.nyc.gov/monkeypox.

Stay safe,
Mark
