NYC PUBLIC ADVOCATE'S STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF A SECOND ASYLUM SEEKER IN A CITY SHELTER

"Another person who came to our country in desperate need and with fervent hope has lost their life to suicide. His death is a tragic casualty of a humanitarian crisis spurred by political maneuvers, and I offer condolences and support to his family.

"The city’s right to shelter should come inherent with a moral mandate to help protect all within our shelters, to ensure they have the health supports, including mental health, to live and succeed in our city. We also need state and federal support, in resources and in policies, to address what is a national failure to reform our immigration systems. Ahead of any coming escalation in the number of people seeking asylum here, we must ready our social service infrastructure with urgency to meet future need and prevent future loss."
