District Attorney Darcel D. Clark today announced that a NYC Department of Correction Officer has pleaded guilty to Official Misconduct for filing false reports about striking a Rikers Island inmate and has resigned as a result of the prosecution.
District Attorney Clark said, “This Officer has been held accountable for filing misleading reports and no longer is a DOC Officer for violating the standards of conduct that Correction Officers must adhere to in order to maintain the public’s trust.”
District Attorney Clark said NYC Department of Correction Officer Carl Williams pleaded guilty on January 8, 2024, to Official Misconduct and was sentenced to a Conditional Discharge by Bronx Supreme Court Justice George Villegas.
According to the investigation by the New York City Department of Investigation and the Bronx District Attorney’s Public Integrity Bureau, at approximately 6:15 a.m. on October 14, 2021, inside the Otis Bantum Correctional Center, Williams was observed on surveillance video striking an inmate in the face. Correction Officers Jatan Das and Roy Dewar allegedly observed the assault. The investigation found that the defendants submitted reports to the Department of Correction claiming the inmate was the aggressor and that use of force was justified.
Jatan Das has pleaded guilty to Disorderly Conduct, a violation, and received a Conditional Discharge, with the condition that he would resign from the department. The case against Roy Dewar is pending.
District Attorney Clark thanked the Department of Investigation for their assistance with the case.
