Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson - Community Resources & Updates

Dear Neighbor,

Thank you for joining us for another week in review.

Governor Kathy Hochul joined us at Bronx Borough Hall to announce support for maternal and infant care in the Bronx. I want to thank Governor Hochul for her $8 million capital investment in a Maternal Health Center of Excellence at Morris Heights Health Center, her legislation creating a state doula directory, and for allocating funding to support the state’s Regional Perinatal Centers to provide high-level perinatal and infant care throughout our state. Together with our partners in government, Maternal Health Consortium, and birthing advocates, we are committed to supporting healthy pregnancies and improving our borough`s health infrastructure. You can click here for more information on the announcement.

We are also proud to host a Bronx Construction Career and Training Resource Fair tomorrow at Bronx Borough Hall in partnership with the NYC Department of Design and Construction. The resource fair will be an opportunity to meet potential employers and learn more about the construction industry. Please bring multiple copies of your resume and come prepared to meet with representatives from various trades. The first session will begin at 10 AM.

Lastly, we want to hear from you! The New York City Charter Revision Commission (“CRC”) will host a Government and Election Reform Forum and Public Input Session in the Bronx to discuss proposed New York City Charter changes.

What does this mean?

The New York City Charter (“Charter”) provides the structure of city government and key powers of city elected officials and agencies.

At this forum, the public is invited to testify about any matter of importance to city government and to suggest changes to the Charter, while experts will provide testimony on government and election reform proposals.

Who can attend/testify?

This meeting is open to the public, and the public will have the opportunity to testify before members of the Commission.

Any member of the public may testify about their ideas for improving the City Charter for up to three (3) minutes in person or over Zoom.

IN THE COMMUNITY

When analyzing the issues around maternal mortality and morbidity, it is clear that there is a maternal health crisis that is disproportionately affecting Black birthing people in our borough.

To effectively address this issue, we are eliminating barriers that prevent our residents from receiving culturally sensitive, patient-centered care that is attuned to their unique needs and free of bias and racism that has resulted in the preventable deaths of too many pregnant people.

The energy was amazing this year at the National Puerto Rican Day Parade! We were proud to represent our Bronx Boriqua community!

!Què viva Puerto Rico!

We were proud to host the first-ever Puerto Rico flag-raising at Bronx Borough Hall, which highlighted the culture, history, and contributions of the Puerto Rican community to our great borough.

The Puerto Rico flag means so much to so many and represents the strength and resiliency of the Puerto Rican people.

I want to thank the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, Inc., for partnering on this event, our emcee, David Rodriguez, and everyone who joined us for this historic moment.

Love is alive and well in the Bronx!

I attended our Senior Prom for couples who are celebrating over 25 years of marital bliss in our borough.

Congratulations to these incredible couples whose love inspires us all. We wish them many more years of happiness and fulfillment.

Pride has officially started in the Boogie Down! We were proud to join our LGBTQIA+ Taskforce and community leaders to raise the Pride flag at borough hall.

A huge congratulations to our incredible honorees for their achievements and commitment to the Bronx and our LGBTQIA+ community.
