BRONX MAN SENTENCED TO 22 YEARS IN PRISON FOR FATALLY SHOOTING MAN ON BRONX STREET, SLASHING DOC OFFICERS IN JAIL

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark today announced that a Bronx man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a fatal shooting, and an additional two years in prison for slashing two NYC Department of Correction Officers while awaiting trial in Rikers Island.

District Attorney Clark said, “This killing was the brutal culmination of a feud that started several days earlier. With no regard to other people on the street, the defendant shot his intended target multiple times. Thankfully no innocent bystanders were hit by gunfire. While awaiting trial at Rikers Island, this defendant assaulted two Correction Officers who attempted to put out a fire he started in his cell. He will now spend 22 years in prison, sending a message that anyone who commits violence on our streets or in the jails will be held fully accountable.”

NYC Correction Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie said, “This was a brazen attack on the officers who risk their lives every day to keep our jails safe. These officers showed tremendous courage under direct threat, and their actions prevented other people from getting hurt. Thank you to Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark and her team for sending a powerful message with this prosecution: Violence against our staff will never be tolerated.”

District Attorney Clark said the defendant, Anthony Taveras-Morales, 24, of Union Avenue, the Bronx was sentenced today to 20 years in prison for first-degree Manslaughter and two years in prison for second-degree Assault by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Tara Collins. He pleaded guilty to both charges on May 7, 2025. The sentences will run consecutively.

According to the fatal shooting investigation, on September 14, 2020, the defendant and Jaguar Housey, 29, engaged in a fight in which Taveras-Morales got the better of Housey. Taveras-Morales posted video of the fight on social media. On September 16, 2020, at approximately 8:17 p.m., Housey spotted the defendant on Prospect Avenue and ran after him. Taveras-Morales fired two shots at Housey striking him in the left arm and in the head. A Crimestoppers tip led to the capture of Taveras-Morales on February 23, 2022, in an apartment in the Bronx.

District Attorney Clark thanked NYPD Detective Patrick Sullivan for his work in the investigation.

According to the Rikers Island assault investigation, on December 17, 2024, at approximately 8:40 p.m., in the Rose M. Singer Center Enhanced Supervision Housing, the defendant lit combustible material in the food slot of his cell. A Correction Captain responded and ordered the defendant to extinguish the fire. Taveras-Morales placed additional combustible material on the fire. The captain used pepper spray and attempted to enter the cell with assisting DOC officers. Upon entering, two Officers were each slashed on the hand by the defendant, with a sharp object. A sharpened piece of plastic, a 6-inch nail, and a scalpel were recovered in the defendant’s cell.

District Attorney Clark thanked BXDA Detective Investigator Tashana Phelps for her assistance in the case. District Attorney Clark thanked NYC DOC Officer Investigators Korab Hansangjekaj, Epifanio Vasquez, James Ruiz and Walter Holmes from the NYC DOC Intelligence Bureau for their work in the investigation.
