BRONX MAN INDICTED FOR ASSAULTING TWO FDNY EMTs RESPONDING TO ASSIST HIM

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced that a Bronx man has been indicted for Assault for allegedly attacking two FDNY Emergency Medical Service Technicians who had responded to assist him.

District Attorney Clark said, “These dedicated EMTs arrived at the defendant’s residence to render medical aid. The defendant allegedly hit and punched the paramedics multiple times. Violence against first responders will not be tolerated.”

District Attorney Clark said the defendant, Jose Bencosme, 22, of Sedgwick Avenue, the Bronx was arraigned today on two counts of second-degree Assault, two counts of third-degree Assault and two counts of second-degree Harassment before Bronx Supreme Court Justice Pamela Goldsmith. Supervised release was continued, and he is due back in court on August 31, 2026.

According to the investigation, on April 9, 2026, at approximately 10:00 p.m., FDNY EMS Technicians Felix Mezquita, Jr, and Ali Issa responded to 1889 Sedgwick Avenue. In the course of responding to this call, the defendant allegedly punched Mezquita, Jr. in the face and grappled with him, causing Mezquita, Jr. to hit his head against a wall. Issa attempted to help his partner, and the defendant allegedly punched Issa in the face and head multiple times. Mezquita, Jr. suffered a laceration to his head, requiring approximately five staples. Issa suffered bruising and swelling to his face and head. Both victims received treatment at St. Barnabas Hospital.

District Attorney Clark thanked NYPD Officer Pamela Sosa from the 46th Precinct for her work in the case.

An indictment is an accusatory instrument and not proof of a defendant’s guilt.
