Come down to the Bronx River Art Center this Saturday, July 25th starting at 12pm to celebrate year's City of Water Day with an afternoon of free activities, including art workshops, a nature walk, a tea ceremony, and more!
City of Water Day is a region-wide day organized by the Waterfront Alliance and New York–New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program (HEP) to champion a climate-resilient New York and New Jersey Harbor. Through our rotating indoor art workshops and guided outdoor excursions along the Bronx River Greenway to Drew Gardens, BRAC is taking part by offering a day that connects art-making, environmental learning, and community participation through hands-on activities rooted in the Bronx River watershed.

Get your walking shoes on with Nilka Martell from Loving the Bronx, as she leads a City of Water Day walking tour exploring the rich history and remarkable transformation of the Bronx River. Participants will journey through the river's story — from its Indigenous roots and the colonial era to its role during slavery, decades of pollution, and the community-led restoration that continues today. The tour also includes visits to two Bronx River-adjacent community gardens, including Drew Gardens, highlighting the vital connection between local communities, green spaces, and the river.
NOTE: This walk starts off-site. Meet the leader on the corner of 180th St. and Boston Rd at 12pm. The tour ends at BRAC.

Blue to the Root: Indigo Dyeing Workshop

Experience the process of indigo dyeing, a technique that transforms fabric into beautiful shades of blue through the power of oxidation. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn the basics of preparing, folding, and dipping fabric into an indigo vat, then watch as your design comes to life.
No experience is needed! A brief demonstration and step-by-step guidance will help you create your own unique dyed piece. While your fabric dyes, enjoy fun nature-inspired activities, including a crossword puzzle and leaf maze. Come explore, create, and experience the timeless art of indigo dyeing with Sheryl Saly Toure.
Making Marks: A Printmaking Adventure
with Found Art & Texture Rubbings

Led by Andres Senra, participants will collect interesting objects and surfaces from their surroundings, then create texture rubbings using paper and crayons or graphite. This activity encourages observation, creativity, and exploration through found textures.
Storytime & Children's Book Giveaway (12pm)

A story time and book giveaway will be held courtesy of Drew Gardens. Bring your children to see illustrator Laura James read two of her books, Anna Carries Water and My Mother Was a Nanny from 12pm to 12:30pm, followed by a book giveaway. There will also be sensory play activities and coloring books available to enjoy.
Paper Making Workshop (1pm)

Join this paper making workshop with Michele Brody, a Bronx-based environmental artist whose practice centers on handmade paper, sculpture, and immersive installation. With her guidance, you'll make paper using pulp, water, and other natural resources gathered from or near the Bronx River. This activity calls back to the Bronx River's paper mill history and BRAC's restoration legacy.
Tea Ceremony (2pm)

To promote mindfulness, a connection to nature, and community care, artist Wenting Zhang from Tea Arts & Culture will lead a communal tea ceremony.
River Bank Clean-Up (3pm)
Help us keep the river clean! Gloves, bags, and safety briefing will be provided as we tidy up along accessible Bronx River Greenway sections

Quick reminder that summer art classes are now in session, and are running through the end of August! Weekly art education programming includes:
- Summer Kids Art Classes – Youth/Teen (Mon-Thu, 10:30am - 12:30pm)
- $30 a day | $100 for a week
- Handbuilding (Clay) – All Ages (Thu, 4 - 6pm)
- $125 for youth | $175 for adult
- $200 for parent and child | $300 for two adults

We also have BRAC Innovators as a free STEAM program that runs Monday- Thursday from 2pm - 4pm for children and teenagers, with limited slots still remaining.
