Defendant Allegedly Struck Victims with His Fists and a Hairbrush
Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark today announced that a Rikers Island inmate has been indicted on multiple charges of Assault for attacking an NYC Department of Correction Captain and two Officers.
District Attorney Clark said, “This defendant was allegedly observed entering a restricted area and concealing items under his clothing. When confronted by the three Officers and told he would be searched, the defendant allegedly attacked them all. Physical violence on Correction Officers will not be tolerated.”
New York City Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards said, “The safety of our Correction Officers is paramount, and no member of our department should have to endure violence while carrying out their duties. We appreciate Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark and her team for their continued partnership in pursuing accountability for assaults against our staff. We remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting the dedicated men and women who serve on the front lines of our correctional facilities.”
District Attorney Clark said that defendant Miles Williams, 25, was arraigned today on seven counts of second-degree Assault, three counts of third-degree Assault and other related charges by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Pamela Goldmsith. Bail was continued at $100,000 cash/$100,000 bond/$100,000 partially secured bond with 10% surety. He is due back in court on January 5, 2027.
According to the investigation, on September 5, 2026, the defendant, an inmate at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center at Rikers Island, was observed allegedly entering a treatment cubicle at the main clinic. Williams did not have permission to enter this area. As he left the cubicle, the defendant allegedly placed multiple large objects into his clothing. He was approached by a Correction Captain and two Officers, who instructed him to remove the items from his pants and submit to a search. Williams refused and then allegedly attacked the three victims with closed fists. They sustained injuries that required them to be treated at the hospital. One victim had lacerations that required stitches and staples, another victim sustained a fracture to the nose.
District Attorney Clark thanked NYC Department of Correction Officer Investigators Paul Smith, John Cammisuli, Cecil Phillips, Walter Holmes and Jeffrey Rios from the NYC Department of Correction Intelligence Bureau for their work in the investigation.
An indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
