RECOVERY FOR ALL OF US: CITY FINANCES MOST NEW CONSTRUCTION OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING EVER. Mayor cuts ribbon at Bronx Commons 305 units of affordable housing

 Mayor Bill de Blasio joined Deputy Mayor Vicki Been, the New York City Department of Housing Preservation (HPD) and the New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to announce that New York City secured 28,310 affordable homes through new construction and preservation deals in Fiscal Year 2021 (FY21). That figure includes a record-breaking 11,322 new affordable homes, 64% of which are affordable for families of three earning less than $53,000. The City also created nearly 3,300 units for seniors, and nearly 2,800 units formerly homeless New Yorkers – both records for this administration. To commemorate a milestone year, the Mayor visited Bronx Commons, a 305-unit affordable housing development that combines deeply affordable housing with a dynamic new music hall, pre-school, and other retail and recreational space.

“By the end of this administration, we will reach 200,000 affordable apartments for the people of New York City,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio, the number is currently at 194,000 units of affordable housing. We have fought tirelessly to bring New Yorkers the safe, healthy, and affordable homes they deserve,  said Vicky Been Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development. Bronx Commons’ development team includes non-profit WHEDco and BFC. WHEDco also manages the cultural centerpiece of the development, the Bronx Music Hall, which will showcase the Bronx’s music history and catalyzes economic development in the community. The development also includes a 428-panel rooftop Solar PV installation, one of the largest on an affordable housing development in New York City. The Bronx leads all boroughs with 66,204 units of affordable housing since Mayor de Blasio became mayor in 2014. The next highest borough is Brooklyn with 49,926. 

Councilman Rafael Salamanca welcomed Bronx Commons, adding that his council district has the most affordable housing under the de Blasio Administration.

Deputy Mayor Vicky Been speaks of the achievement of the de Blasio administration to meet its goal of 200,000 new or reconditioned affordable housing units during Mayor de Blasio's eight years in office.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says that his administration has only 6,000 more units of affordable housing to go to meet his goal of 200,000 units of affordable housing in his eight years in office. 

Mayor de Blasio cuts the ribbon to officially open Bronx Commons, which includes a 260 seat music hall that can be used for other events, a gym, and 150 seat Pre-K.
