Shining a Light on New Yorkers in Need
The COVID-19 pandemic had devastating health, economic and social consequences. Yet for many, hardships existed long before that time; millions of New Yorkers face daily challenges to make ends meet while living at or near the federal poverty level—resulting in painful choices related to basic needs such as food, shelter, health care and transportation.
To better understand these impacts, State Comptroller DiNapoli issued five major reports examining “New Yorkers in Need.” The analysis in these reports provides a fact base for understanding local and demographic variations and makes recommendations for bolstering federal safety nets and improving State efforts.
