Last night, I called Public Advocate Jumaane Williams to congratulate him on his re-election. I wish him, his family, and his supporters well.
As a woman of color, running citywide against an incumbent in one of the toughest political arenas in the country, I knew the road wouldn’t be easy. But I also knew this: If we want a government that truly helps the people it serves, then more women of courage, conviction, and compassion must have the courage to step into the arena—even when the odds are long, even when the machine against you is strong.
We received more votes than the women running for Mayor combined.
We built a campaign powered by heart, hope, and hard work.
We brought together hundreds of thousands of people from every borough, every background, every walk of life—united by a shared belief that government can and should do better.
To every supporter who gave your time, your energy, your faith—you carried this campaign. I will never forget your belief in me.
The fight has only just begun.
