AHEAD OF JULY 4TH TRAVEL WEEKEND, ADMINISTRATION FOR CHILDREN’S SERVICES REMINDS FAMILES TO “PARK. LOOK. LOCK.” – NEVER LEAVE A CHILD ALONE IN A HOT CAR

This Year Alone, There Have Been At Least Seven Tragedies in the U.S. Involving Children Left Alone in Hot Cars

ACS Shares Tips on How to Keep Your Children Safe

Ahead of July 4th weekend, Commissioner Jess Dannhauser, of the NYC Administration for Children’s Services, reminded families that they should never leave their child alone in a hot car, not even for a minute. Already, this year, there have been at least seven tragedies involving children in hot vehicles across the country. Many of these incidents involve a parent or caregiver forgetting a child was in the vehicle. Even with the windows rolled down or the air conditioning on, a child's body temperature can rise three to five times faster than an adult's. If anyone sees a child unattended in a vehicle, they should immediately call 911.

“Parenting is challenging and, we all have a lot on our mind, that’s why, when driving a vehicle, you should make it a habit to park-look-lock and make sure you never leave your child behind in the car. Leaving a child left unattended in a hot car - even for a minute - can have deadly consequences. We want New Yorkers to have a fun July 4th but also a safe one so visit our website www.nyc.gov/summersafetykids for more information on how to keep your children safe!,” said Commissioner Jess Dannhauser.

Park-Look-Lock Tips:

• Make sure all occupants leave the vehicle when unloading. Don't overlook sleeping babies!

• Always lock your car and keep car keys and fobs out of reach of children at all times. Teach children that cars are never to be used as a play area.

• Keep a stuffed animal in the car seat and when the child is put in the seat, place the animal in the front with the driver. Or place your purse, briefcase, or cell phone in the back seat as a reminder that you have your child in the car.

• Make Look Before You Lock a routine whenever you get out of the car.

• Have a plan that your childcare provider will call you if your child does not show up for school.
