Construction has broken ground on a renovation project for Building C at the Hunts Point Cooperative Market (HPCM) in Hunts Point, The Bronx. Led by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) in partnership with Councilmember Rafael Salamanca Jr. and the HPCM, the project aims to modernize the aging structure with a new sealed, energy-efficient insulated metal façade. The property is located by the confluence of the East and Bronx Rivers and is bounded by Food Center Drive to the south, east, and west.
The modernization effort is backed by an $18 million investment, $12 million of which was secured by Councilmember Salamanca. McKissack & McKissack, a minority-owned design and construction firm, will lead the renovation and construction management.
Originally built in 1972, Building C is one of the earliest structures on the 60-acre site. The renovations will replace deteriorating masonry, improve air quality, and ensure long-term durability without disrupting market operations. The project is part of a broader $1 billion revitalization initiative spanning city, state, and federal governments to enhance the entire Hunts Point Food Distribution Center, the largest of its kind in the country. HPCM distributes over 1.1 billion pounds of meat annually and employs approximately 2,400 New Yorkers.
The project also aligns with the “Hunts Point Forward” plan, a city-backed $40 million initiative launched in 2022 to improve quality of life and economic opportunities in the South Bronx. Building C’s overhaul is among several infrastructure improvements in the area.
