State Senator Gustavo Rivera on the shelter opening at the former Manhattan College Dorm

GOVERNMENT HEADER

State Senator Gustavo Rivera released the following statement.

"This week, my office was informed by the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) that the former Manhattan College dormitory, Overlook Manor, located at 435 West 238th Street, will officially become a family shelter for asylum seekers as of August 2024. The shelter will have a capacity of 95 rooms.

"I share Bronxites’ concerns about the lack of affordable housing throughout New York and our outsized reliance on temporary shelters. Our community is increasingly burdened by the unprecedented affordability crisis. Even so-called “affordable housing” is often not truly affordable. All New Yorkers are better served by a housing system that works to address the root of the problem, without further exasperating our housing crisis. However, this false narrative of scarcity of resources is used by the powerful and wealthy as a distraction towards real solutions that prioritize working and vulnerable New Yorkers.

"I will continue to work with the City and local community members to improve the transparency of this process and with the Department of Homeless Services to maintain an open line of communication with our community.

"As our new neighbors move in, I urge the community to remember that this shelter represents our commitment in upholding the values and compassion that define us as a sanctuary city. Our community thrives when we support and care for each other."
