Bronx Jewish Center Menorah Lighting at Loreto Park

It was a cold winter day as the sun was setting on the first day of Chanukah as Rabbi Saadia Pewzner of the Bronx Jewish Center was about to light the first light of the menorah in front of Loreto Park next to the Morris Park Christmas Tree as it was also Christmas Day a rare occasion that has happened in 1910, 1921, 1959, 2005, and now in 2024.

Many Bronx Jewish Center members came to celebrate the first night of Chanukah, where potato latkes and jelly donuts are eaten and dancing happens as those of the Jewish faith celebrate the burning of oil in a lamp for eight days and nights during the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Thus the eight days of Chanukah. Captain Theathong the commander of the 49th Precinct was on hand to help light the first candle of the Morris Park Menorah lighting.

Captain Theathong said a few words before assisting Rabbi Pewzner light the first candle of the Morris Park Menorah.

Captain Theathong carefully lights the middle higher light before the first light on the right is lit.

Rabbi Pewsner lit the first light on the right, as you can still see the flame coming from the gas lighter he used.

With the candles lit, it was time to dance to celebrate the first night of Chanukah.

Steven Glosser, Rabbi Pewzner, and David Applebaum hold up a happy Chanukah sign in front of the electric menorah by Loreto Park.
