GrowNYC’s Volunteer Spotlight

Shirley Wu (Volunteer Spotlight Photo)

Meet Shirley, our spotlight volunteer of the month! Read the interview below to learn more about Shirley.

1. How long have you been volunteering with GrowNYC?
I have been volunteering with GrowNYC for eight months now, and I look forward to volunteering for many more!

2. Why did you decide to volunteer with GrowNYC?
I always loved the greenmarkets growing up, but I had fallen out of the habit of visiting them. I decided to start volunteering with GrowNYC to motivate myself to frequent them again, as well as to compel myself to support local producers and eat more sustainably grown produce.

3. Tell us about yourself, what interests you and how do you spend your time?
I am passionate about human rights, restorative justice, and community care. I work for a non-profit called the Innocence Project, which works to free innocent people from prison, and I organize with Court Watch NYC, a project that trains New Yorkers to monitor arraignments to reduce the harms of the judicial system. When I'm not working or volunteering, I spend my time trying to cram as much live theatre and music into my schedule as possible and borrowing way too many books from the library at once.

4. What has been your favorite moment/memory volunteering with GrowNYC so far?
Once when I was volunteering at Brooklyn Borough Hall, I made a salad with spiralized apple, fennel, and onion and garnished it with arugula and sumac. It inspired a lot of market-goers to give sumac a try, and one market regular was such a fan that she kept flagging down passersby to get them to try a sample! I love making food and feeding people, so it always warms my heart when the people who try my samples enjoy them.
