GrowNYC’s Volunteer Spotlight

Rachel B.

Meet Rachel, our spotlight volunteer of the month! Read the interview below to learn more about Rachel.

1. How long have you been volunteering with GrowNYC?
I have been volunteering since 2018, first as a compost volunteer and then later as a food access volunteer.

2. Why did you decide to volunteer with GrowNYC?
I first started volunteering because I was (and still am) worried about climate change, and wanted to do something about it. I wanted to help with the compost program, and educate people about the benefits of eating locally. Over time I became a regular shopper at the Columbia Greenmarket, and I continued volunteering because it gave me a sense of community. I love being a part of something that brings the community together every week.

3. Tell us about yourself, what interests you and how do you spend your time?
When I am not volunteering, I enjoy running, reading, spending time outside, and watching birds with my cat Henrietta.

4. What has been your favorite moment/memory volunteering with GrowNYC so far?
During COVID I would regularly volunteer at the 82nd Street Greenmarket on the UES. I would bike there from my apartment in Harlem to help with social distancing efforts — which was no easy trek! It was a good way to explore a new market, and it helped me feel like I was a part of something bigger during a turbulent time.
