The revitalized playground now features new play equipment designed for children of all abilities, with separate areas for ages 2–5 and 5–12. A spray shower, picnic tables, and new seating areas were added to improve comfort for families. The project also included upgraded pavement and curbs, enhanced security lighting, and improved water supply and drainage systems.
New shade trees and dense plantings were installed to mitigate heat and buffer noise from the nearby Cross Bronx Expressway, while sections of perimeter fencing were lowered to make the space more inviting. The playground is named after Jennie Jerome, daughter of financier Leonard Jerome and mother of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The site was acquired by NYC Parks in 1950 during construction of the expressway.
Jennie Jerome Playground is located near the 176th Street station on the 4 train and is also accessible from the Burnside Avenue and Tremont Avenue stations, serving the B and D trains.
“Jennie Jerome Playground is an oasis of recreation in a dense urban environment, offering Bronx children a safe place to play and stay active,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Iris Rodriguez-Rosa. “This site was upgraded through our Community Parks Initiative, which enhances park equity by improving public spaces in high-need neighborhoods.”
